Agra, Uttar Pradesh – The Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah (The Baby Taj)

Agra Baby Taj Bier-Traveller (15)Completed in 1628, this Mausoleum was conceived by Nur Jahan for her father, I’timad-ud-Daulah, a Minister in the court of Shah Jihan. This was the first Tomb in India to be built from marble instead of red sandstone. The Moghul design was a direct inspiration for the more famous attraction in Agra, the Taj Mahal. Jahangir, son of Akbar, fell in love with Nur Jahan once widowed. I’timad-ud-Daulah was therefore grandfather to Mumtaz Mahal for whose Tomb the Taj Mahal was constructed.
Agra Baby Taj Bier-Traveller (27)A much less visited site, there is more freedom at this locus to photograph the ornate wall and ceiling decorations which are in many ways more impressive than the blank walls of the Taj Mahal.
