Fatehpur Sikri is thirty seven kilometres west of Agra. A City in it’s own right, it was the building of the Palace and Fortification in the sixteenth century by the Moghul Emperor- Akbar – which re-affirmed the pre-existing site. Akbar built this huge complex with his own safety in mind as well as for pleasure, the Harem being carefully located. The red sandstone illuminated in the sunshine takes on a special character.
