Skara Brae, Orkney

Skara Brae featured as Chapter 1 in my very first ever History book. At 5000 years old this rivals anything found around the Mediterranean, but maybe not Egypt. Good story – I thought aged 6, having read the material, it was years later that I discovered that there was indeed such a place. But as a Geographer, I thought the same about about Kelham Island when I first read about it in a Geography text. Hector’s first cynical moment is traced back to this, yet I believed every other dubious story delivered to open minds in Primary 1.

Apart from one reconstruction, not on site, Skara Brae has been maintained as found.
