Andechser am Dom – Frauenplatz 7, 80331 München
Sometime in 2019, Andechser am Dom moved a few doors along Frauenplatz from their former location at Weinstraße 7. The new premises are much larger with an upstairs. This page initially records some of the many happy visits to the original premises, the bottom half illustrates the new premises and introduces Brigitte, the new boss.
Twenty plus years ago, Andechser Weissbier Hell (5.5%) was Hector’s favourite Bier on the planet. Whilst tastes have changed, this Weizen is still regarded as the finest of the genre. One of the factors in demoting Weizen was the rediscovery of Helles after a trip to Frischeisen (Kelheim). At Kloster Andechs, Andechser Spezial Hell (5.8%) became a favourite Helles, but could one get it at Andechser am Dom?
This became a long running bad joke, the staff in München never appeared to know the difference between their Vollbier Hell (4.8%) which they do serve and its big brother. Eventually, there were tales of Spezial Hell being served at a specific time once a week outside with the smokers.
Everything changed late one night in November 2018 when Elke Heimpel, the manageress, asked – if we really wanted – Spezial Hell.
Elke had worked at Andechs for many years, we had never met. She appears to be no longer employed at Andechs after the move. Chaps downstairs had a barrel, it was arranged that we would in effect be purchasing the Spezial Hell from them.
Fast forward to Silvester and it was arranged that we too would have a quantity of Spezial Hell for January 1st, 2019. It took us two nights to finish it.
