Scott of The Antarctic – Sea Life – Auckland

I am just going outside and may be some time – the final words of Lawrence Oates in the return from the South Pole. Robert Falcon Scott’s ill-fated 1912 – Terra Nova Expedition – was partly down to his insistence on using ponies, whereas Amundsen had used dogs to transport equipment and supplies. The evaporation of their cooking fuel also meant that Scott’s team had to eat frozen food. Apart from Captain Oates, they died of malnutrition.

I found this replica to be as interesting as the actual living exhibits.

We were spared the aroma of stale tobacco and sweaty sox.
