Australia

Many moons ago, Lord Clive of Crawley worked for a well known travel company, let’s call them Kuoni. As part of their – Close Friends & Family – benefits, Hector was offered heavily discounted – Round The World – flight tickets. The only string, Australia had to be part of the route.

Marg and Hector had a wonderful vacation in Upper Egypt that year instead. It’s all about perception.

Israel 1980, a female Aussie told me – there are no ladies in Australia. I never established what that meant.  At primary school in the 1960s, those who emigrated to Australia never returned.  Half of those who went to Canada did.

The retired Geographer can only wonder at: Great Sandy Desert, Great Australian Bight, Great Barrier Reef, The Snowy Mountains, The Sunshine Coast … not much in the way of imagination.  They don’t have much of a history either. No wonder the ancient Greeks and Romans never bothered visiting. (Wait until I put up my page on Canada!)

My father spent his final years in Australia. Does Hector qualify for citizenship?

Two cities in Australia were visited in 2024 as part of Marg and Hector’s – Round The World In 80 Days – trip  :  Days 6 – 17.

The land of moustaches and Chinese infiltration (by stealth ?), was the observation by the time Hector had completed his whistle-stop visit.

Why quasi-religious restrictions are still imposed upon a surely secular population defies belief.  But as their Prime Minister once said – if you don’t like our ways, don’t come.

Nobody had warned me.

Brisbane  :  Days 6 – 11

Sydney  :  Days 12 -17
