Reverie Bistrot  – Roma

Reverie Bistrot  –  Via dei Campi Flegrei, 55, 00141 Roma

The Rickmeister had led the Bradford four to Roma with accommodation remote from the preferred Trastevere. On announcing that he had a list of over thirty Brewpubs in Roma, Reverie was declared the starting point. That it was nearest to his accommodation was surely only a coincidence. It took those of us who joined him, two trains across the city to reach Roma Nomentana, the suburban railway station in the north-east of Roma.

The river Aniene, a tributary of the Tiber/Tevere, runs through this locale – Valle delle’Aniene. There is parkland along the river banks which might make a return visit a possibility at some future date.

Starbess Birrifico [closed] was one of the small group of Brewpubs in Roma in the early years of the twenty first century. More than thirty by 2016? Hector was sceptical.

When nine of us walked in, the serving Doris was taken aback. The seven taps were studied, most were dismissed. In reality, we had a choice from two. There was also a modest collection of bottled Bier, mostly Belgian. The Birra took an age to pour, another chap was summoned. We had swamped what was a simple Italian corner cafe where the locals would stop off for an espresso.

Ricky’s error was down to accepting one translation of Birreria. It does translate as – Brewpub, but also – alehouse, beer house and brasserie. The best chance of finding Bier brewed on the premises one needs to locate – Birrificio. One then runs the risk of finding a Brewery but no Taproom.

3ºmiglio (Birrificio RuRale, Italia)  5.8%

IPA  Yellow with a slight haze, this was cool light and refreshing, alas no big hop hit.
