Monteriggioni, in the province of Siena, dates back to the thirteenth century. If one is keen on visiting mediaeval, fortified, walled, Italian settlements, then Monteriggioni, to the north-west of Siena, is an ideal place to visit for an afternoon whilst in Toscana /Tuscany.
An excellent afternoon trip from Siena, take Buses 130/131,136, from the bus station. The journey is under an hour.
With no vehicular transport in Monteriggioni, one has to walk up to the hilltop. The car park to the far side then comes into view.
Piazza Roma, the main square, has a sufficiency of cafes / restaurants to meet the needs of all day trippers. Staying the night here might be interesting, there are four hotels.
Walking the perimeter walls is a must, fourteen watch towers to negotiate, though the walk does not embrace the entire perimeter.

On Piazza Roma is Monteriggioni in Arme, the Weapons Museum.

Bearing arms is an option.
