Basilica di San Petronio – Bologna

The Vatican, Köln Dom, and Kloster Andechs feature in Bier-Traveller, whilst exterior architecture is always appreciated, interiors are rarely visited.

It was the astronomical feature of this Basilica in Bologna which enticed the Hector to cross the threshold. The gods had declared a cloudy day, sundials don’t do so well in such conditions.

The armed guards at the entrance did puzzle, research revealed all.

An early Renaissance fresco created by Giovanni da Modena depicts the founder of a subsequent religion being tortured in hell.

In 2002, Islamic extremists plotted to blow up this church in order to destroy the image. So it goes.
