Having criticised all of the other Berlin Hausbrauerei that opened around the Millennium, Eschenbräu has always been cited as the exception. Quite simply, the brewers here can brew.

Knowing the address does not necessarily mean one can locate premises. Both the S Bahn and U Bahn take one to Wedding, the – garden suburb – which became the preferred place to stay for a few years. Alexanderplatz has replaced Wedding being nearer Prenzlauer Berg hence Stone Brewing Taproom and especially Bräugier Brew Pub.

Negotiating one’s way through the back streets towards Eschenbräu used to be quite daunting, Wedding was run down, but improved dramatically in the second decade of this century. Before the days of – the blue dot – guiding one to a precise point, one still had to recognise the featureless building in which Eschenbräu is located. The brewery is in the basement of a block of flats. In summer the benches in the back garden are reassuring, on a winter’s night, things can be quite different.

The brewery/bar always reminds Hector of a Kibbutz bombs-shelter, a  Keller, to misuse the term. The premises have doubled in size since the first visit in 2007, one still has to get used to the walk to the toilet, yes, this is the basement of a block of flats.

Late spring, one may find the seasonal brew – Weizen Bock – enjoy, their finest Bier, surely! In the summer, Eschenbräu is quite different, – the hut – is open, sitting in a residential back garden surrounded by kitchen windows always feels a bit strange, but better than being crammed in to nearby Vagabund Brauerei.

Weizen Bock  6.8%

This has everything, huge – banana – flavour, body and is dangerously quaffable. The website gives the Saisonbier, if this is on, don’t miss it.
