Brugge – Belgien

Brugge, never Bruges, this is Flanders, the Flemish/Dutch speaking part of Belgium. It’s near coastal location, Zeebrugge, always pronounced correctly, is its seaport, and so consequently has a Maritime climate. Bring an umbrella.

Arriving in Brugge

Some arrive at Zeebrugge on a pleasure cruise and so have limited time in Brugge. It is a mere sixteen minutes by train from Zeebrugge. Brugge lies on the Brussel – Oostende train line. From Brussel, one passes through Gent St. Pieters. Arriving at Brugge, do not expect to see as station sign for Bruges, else you will miss your stop.

Brugge train station lies to the south of the old town. Frequent buses get you there, via the Bus Station. Buses 1 & 2 drop you at Dijver south east of Grote Markt, adjacent to the canal which skirts round the east side of the old town. Yes, the canal boat trip is worth doing, on a dry day.

If one is staying for a few days in Flanders, download the de Lijn app and purchase the ten ticket package which is valid across the network Gent and Antwerpen too!

Do not attempt to speak French in Flanders.

Straffe Hendrik – De Halve Maan and Brouwerij Bourgogne des Flanderes are the only breweries in Brugge. Others have come and gone since 1997 when Hector first set foot in Brugge and met the famous Daisey Claeys at ‘t Brugs Beertje. She suggested I try Hanssens Kriek, the rest they say, is history.

Whilst trips to Belgium have been regular, stays in Brugge have been sporadic, the accommodation is pricey. The opening of the Ibis Budget directly outside the train station has markedly changed things.
