Toone – Imp. Schuddeveld 6, 1000 Brussel
What do you mean you have no Kwak?
A minute’s walk from Grand Place, Toone may be secreted in an alley, however, it is well sign-posted. If one looks, ye shall find. There are three linear rooms, the Puppet Theater being in the middle. The Puppet Theater is the oldest surviving in Brussel, however, that’s for the children.
Fist visited in the summer of 1997, visiting Toone has become a feature of every trip to Brussel.
Drinking Kwak from the traditional glass with its wooden stand is part of the ritual, as is the ordering of the Cheese to be drowned with Celery Salt.
Despite the original sign on the wall still advertising this, in 2022, we were told this was no more.
The service at Toone used to be outstanding, it has declined in recent years. There was one night they had no Kwak but mistakenly (?) sold a Lambic at a well discounted price, served them right. Late opening used to be a feature, alas no more.
Conclusion: don’t leave your visit too late, order Kwak and Cheese, make a comment if neither is forthcoming. Delirium Café is nearby and always open late.
