Sassari is located in the northwest of Sardinia and is the second largest city on the island. Sassari was selected as the locus for a four night stay in July 2019 due to both its accessibility by train and revues on other media insisting it was a – must visit – city. Nearby Alghero is the beach resort for those who prefer that sort of vacation. Ryanair serve Alghero Airport.
By day there is little to see in Sassari. On a warm July afternoon in the old town, there is nobody to see. By dusk, everything changes, people spill out onto the pavements outside cafes and bars. In the old town there is the sense of the real Italia. Sassari is not a tourist resort, these are the locals, entire families out of an evening. Piazza Efisio e Pasqualae Tola is the busiest locale with movies screened in the middle of the square. Sassari by night has a unique atmosphere, buzzing, but remote from that encountered in any European beach resort.
Having arrived by train, we dragged our bags up the hill past the Giardini Pubblici towards Viale Italia. Our accommodation was at the highly recommended La terraza di Anna (Viale Italia N 3, 07100 Sassari) above Abetone Music Bar which was visited daily at Bier o’clock. The old town lay across the other side of the park. This proved to be an ideal location, the Birreria were never more than a fifteen minute walk and the Bier scene impressed. It was a fair hike for Curry, however.
The old town has two historic sights Piazza d’Italia and the Duomo – Cattedrale di San Nicola. Fontana di Rosello lies outwith to the north.
By the second day of our visit we realised that Alghero was calling. Alghero by day, Sassari by night, made our stay in the northwest of Sardegna most memorable.
