Trieste – Friuli Venezia Giulia

Trieste is located at the northern end of the Adriatic, some 145km east of Venezia and near near the border with Slovenia. Trieste lies in Italia, but this has not always been the case.

On seeing – The Sound of Music – how many have wondered why Captain Georg von Trapp, a retired naval officer, had been in the Austrian Navy. Why would Österreich  have a navy? It’s landlocked! This is a Bier & Travel Blog, so find out for yourself!

Trieste Airport – Aeroporto Friuli Venezia Giulia Spa – is around half an hour by train. One can fly to Sicilia and Sardegna from Trieste, which must be useful to know.

Trieste is accessible by train from Venezia, for those who intend continuing to travel along the Adriatic then bus becomes a necessity. Beware, the tardiness, nae unreliability, of Flixbus can be frustrating. Other bus companies are available.

Once the old town and the the seafront have been explored, Piazza Unità d’Italia being particularly impressive, the climb up to Castello di San Giusto and the adjacent 14th century Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire is recommended.

The views over the city from the hilltop put Trieste in perspective. The 1st century C.E. amphitheatre – Teatro Romano di Trieste – lies on a main street, so for once there is no entry fee.

Thereafter, trips elsewhere are worth considering. Udine to the north, is thankfully accessible by train. A day trip to Koper (Slovenia) by bus is certainly worthwhile.

Trieste comes alive at night. Piazza della Borsa is the obvious area of attraction, however, the restaurants around Arco di Riccardo (33 BCE) are worth exploring.

Italian, Greek and Indian food was enjoyed, though Marg did declare that after a visit to one venue that I should never order Pizza in Italia again. Also, try and check the portion size before ordering, €15.00 for this Ravioli at a pavement cafe was out of order.

Knowing of Trieste’s Austrian heritage, there was always the belief that this city would have embraced – Bier – long before the rest of Italia. It was this which put Trieste on the bucket list. The five nights spent here in the summer of 2018 proved to be fulfilling Bier-wise, Hops Beerstrò being the standout venue.

Hotel Portacavana was a major disappointment.
