On the site of an old fortification, the Park Cytadela is an easy stroll to the north of the Stare Miasto, Poznan. As one is likely to approach from the south, the cemetery is likely to be the first area encountered.
The Fallen interred here date back to Napoleonic times. The Great Escape has immortalised the memory of The Fifty who were executed after their escape from Stalag Luft III. The ashes of forty nine of The Fifty are interred here.
In the heart of the park are various sculptures which occupy the open spaces. For those who have an interest in the hardware of war, an array of tanks and aeroplanes are on display. There is also a Military Museum.
There is a cafe in the middle of the park which is particularly attractive due to the plants and foliage which are incorporated into the layout of this source of refreshments.
