March 24, 1944 marks the day when there was a mass breakout of P.O.W.s from Stalag Luft III (Sagan), all but three were eventually recaptured. Fifty were shot.
On the eastern extremity of the graveyard lies an arc of headstones. Squadron Leader Roger Bushell (Big X) who masterminded the escape was immortalised in the movie – The Great Escape. His character, Roger Bartlett was played by Richard Attenborough. In reality, it was allegedly – Herr Bushell – who fell for the – good luck – trap as he attempted to cross the Spanish border.
