Hector Bounces Back – Day 5 – Düsseldorf & Ratingen

Dusseldorf & Ratingen Bier-Traveller (5)G-RAF  t-shirt Day

With a Late Night Curry, even The Hector felt like a change of Diet-Heute. However, this did not prevent a reconnaissance walk to establish the veracity of the location of a found address. Tomorrow’s brunch.

With Dr. Stan and Jonathan leading the way, we took the Tram from Heinrich Heine Alle to the end of the line, Ratingen. Neil was back on form, Kenny’s first day out in this Company.

We trooped up the hill from the Terminus in search of the The Ratinger Faßen. We found the rear. The front was covered in polythene, closed. Permanently? Who knows.

Dusseldorf & Ratingen Bier-Traveller (6)Dusseldorf & Ratingen Bier-Traveller (7)

Walking on to the Marktplatz, Dr. Stan we were now looking for Three Queens, Three Kings had to do, Bier at last.

Dusseldorf & Ratingen Bier-Traveller (13)Dusseldorf & Ratingen Bier-Traveller (8)

Bräuerei Ausschank Schlüssel am Markt, aka Drei Königen, sells Schlüssel Alt on gravity, unlike every other outlet Hector has experienced to date.  The Düsseldorf Altstadt outlet used to be the final port of call back in the day when Uerige shut early, no more. It is years since Hector last experienced this Alt, Excellent presented in this manner.  Big Altbier.

More Pasta

Dusseldorf & Ratingen Bier-Traveller (17)Dusseldorf & Ratingen Bier-Traveller (14)

Just how much Pasta Hector has consumed this summer could be calculated, there are photos of every intake. Pasta with Salmon, always a favourite. This should keep Hector going until a midnight Kebab.

Dusseldorf & Ratingen Bier-Traveller (19)Further up the hill lies the Ratinger Bräuhaus, a new Alt for Hector and a Hausbrauerei too. Again Altbier worthy of the visit. We were made particularly welcome, Already there was a feeling that Trips to Ratingen would become a ritual part of any future Düsseldorf Trip.

There was a classic afternoon convectional rainstorm, where did that umbrella come from, Hector?

Neil and Hector led the sprint downhill to Gaststätte Suitbertusstuben whose building we had admired on the way up. Uerige poured Direkt, what more could we ask for? Hector’s favourite Altbier and shelter. Ratingen impressed, Hector will be back.

Back to Düsseldorf and a New Arrival

Only one Alt could follow Uerige, more of the same – At Source! The Five, sitting in the Big Room were soon Six with the arrival of Steve. This was Kenny’s First experience of this Company too.

Dusseldorf & Ratingen Bier-Traveller (36)Dusseldorf & Ratingen Bier-Traveller (39)

With ticketing not matching our current numbers, Dr. Stan walked back to Schumacher, Jonathan called it a night, Steve, Neil and Hector alighted at Ostrasse, Kenny was never seen again.

Standing in The Pit, we were recognised by our Waiter from last evening. We were now Locals.

What Kebab?

Hector Bounces Back – Day 4 – Düsseldorf

The DB App insisted our train from Soest was cancelled yet it was still showing on the board. A change of designation. We arrived in Düsseldorf on schedule in the early afternoon. The Ibis City behind the Hauptbahnhof is always a few Euros cheaper per night than the one in the Station, for the difference of a three minute walk.

Neil decided to have a Quiet Day. Hector had Curry-Heute in mind, Kenny, Dr. Stan and Jonathan headed off to who knows where in search of obscure Bier outlets.  Kenny declared his interest in joining me, at some time.

Once upon a time, Hector was a frequent visitor to Düsseldorf. Sadly, those who run the budget airlines do not wish to take the people of Central Scotland to Nordrhein Westfalen on a Friday evening and return us at a sensible time on a Sunday.  In recent years we have had flights to Dortmund and Köln disappear, yet they were always full. In the time that Bier-Traveller has been in operation; passing through, or a late night arrival, is all that has been achieved.  To come here and relax was fundamental to the conception of Hector Bounces Back.

Finding a Düsseldorf Curry House proved frustrating. The best part of an hour was lost before I found myself in Mayur, success.

Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (9)Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (7)

By this time Dr. Stan and Kenny had sent texts describing where they were. Google Maps did not help by locating the given information at two loci. The U Bahn, in Düsseldorf a Tram in reality, took Hector across the Rhein to set foot on the West Bank, Oberkassel, for the first time.

Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (8)Hausbrauerei Alterbahnhof is located at the Belsenplatz Haltestelle, simples.

The Chaps were in the garden at the rear as befits a summer afternoon, there was shade. The Gulasch Alt, the first Alt of the Trip, was a welcome change from the days on Kölsch. Even drier than Kölsch, this has better suited the Hector Palate in recent years.

Some ate, some couldn’t. A leisurely Litre, and it was time to return to the Altstadt. Kenny decided to bale at this time and rendezvous at a time and place of his choosing.

Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (14)Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (16)

The first stop across the bridge is adjacent to Im Füchsen, IMHO – one of the Big Three Altbier sources in terms of taste and satisfaction. Kenny caught up with the three of us in no time at all. Time to move on. This is what we do, so it goes.

Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (21)Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (17)

Dr. Stan and Jonathan knew of a new Microbrewery between Füchsen and UerigeKürzer. Somehow Jonathan arrived first and pronounced the Bier to be not as good as last time. Three more were ordered. The first sip gave it away. Sweet! Disgustingly so. For the second time on this Trip, Hector was given a Bier that could not be consumed. The advantage of 0.25ml Glasses. Indeed after two sips, Kenny and Dr. Stan were in agreement. Jonathan stopped too. Bert was summoned, Die Rechnung settled.

You’re Bier is Horrible – was my parting statement. The Waiter was puzzled to see four glasses, barely touched. Don’t go there.

Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (25)Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (27)

Uerige is Hector’s favourite Altbier source. It was now early evening. A few glasses would be consumed here, but Schumacher could not be blanked today. I would be returning to Uerige, more than once, hopefully, in the coming days.

Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (26)Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (28)

The Tram was taken back towards Oststraße. Jonathan stayed on to the Hauptbahnhof. Dr. Stan was waiting for Kenny and Hector – in The Pit.  Dr. Stan had walked.

Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (31)Dusseldorf HBB4 Bier-Traveler.com (32)

I used to hate standing/sitting in the entrance vestibule, especially when there is a spacious room to the right on entry. However, the last Altbier of the day in Düsseldorf has become a tradition here. Since the smoking ban this is perfect. Service is smart too.

Kenny had become intrigued by Hector’s eating plan for the Trip. He also fancied a Curry. He knows The Rule. Dr. Stan went home, we moved a few metres along the street to the Taj Mahal, for Half an Hour only, it appears.

The Hausbrauerei and Brewery Taps visited today:

Brauhaus Alter Bahnhof – Belsenplatz 2, Oberkassel, Dusseldorf

Im Füchsen – Ratinger Straße 28, 40213, Düsseldorf

Hector Bounces Back – Day 3 – Soest / Möhnesee – In Memory of 617 Squadron

Soest Bier-Traveller (69)Today The Five would become Six. Jonathan had previously predicted he would join us en route on the Train to Soest. In the end he had miscalculated. At Flughafen Düsseldorf we were straining to see him on the Platform. The Train was Stowed.

Soest Bier-Traveller (7)Soest Bier-Traveller (6)

Checking in at The City Hotel was done electronically, Nay Peeps. Bright, Clean Rooms with a remarkable Shower Room, all appeared well… At night we would discover there was no Aircon, but a Heat Exchanger. It was Hot all night Outside, and so it was a Sweat-box Inside.

Soest is off the beaten track but is famous for Two Features:

Soest Bier-Traveller (10)Soest Bier-Traveller (8)

Soest Bier-Traveller (13)The Möhnesee, where in Operation Chastise, 617 Squadron dropped their Bouncing Bombs to breach the Möhne Dam. This was Hector’s Third visit to the Möhnesee .

Attraction #2 is Bräuhaus Zwiebel. Marg and Hector enjoyed a Superb Evening here Ten Years ago. I have been raving about this for that length of time. Dr. Stan managed a Sneaky Visit once on his own, only today does he admit to this.

Soest Bier-Traveller (14)Soest Bier-Traveller (15)

After a Wander though what is a very Picturesque Town Centre, we found the Brewery. Sitting in a Traditional Ausschank, I asked Doris what was upstairs. The Toilets – was her reply. Anything else? I told her I had been here years ago and sat in a Bright Upstairs Room. Only the Toilet – was her confirmation. In True Dr. Who – Episode 1 mode, I walked around the Building. There, I told you so.

Soest Bier-Traveller (17)Soest Bier-Traveller (18)

Soest Bier-Traveller (20)Soest Bier-Traveller (22)

Peter had travelled up on a different train and had yet to find Bräuhaus Zwiebel. We decided to wait for Jonathan’s arrival before going down to Gunne where the Dam is located. A Bier or Two were enjoyed in the wait. The Unfiltered Helles proved to be a great relief from two days on Kölsch. The last time Hector was here was at the tail end of nothing but Weizen, there was also the distraction of the Maibock. The Zwiebel Helles was loved by all. Dr. Stan and Neil tried the Dunkels and returned smartly to the Helles.  There had to be Onion Soup!

Hector Curry-Heute.comA Big Taxi was arranged to pick us up at 18.15, still no Jonathan. Kenny went back – to recharge – and find Peter. Jonathan was getting nowhere fast, we decided to use the taxi to collect him. I know where your friend is – declared the Driver. Fifteen minutes and €32.00 later we were at the Sperrmauer, as the Möhne Dam is called locally. We would be collected in one hour.

The only Yellow edition of the Hector Bounced Back polo was unveiled to the public.

In Memory of 617 Squadron –  & those who did not return

Soest Bier-Traveller (32)Soest Bier-Traveller (49)Uncannily Marg chose this moment to phone. I reminded her of the scene, a short ten years.

In the middle of the Dam between the Two Towers there was a lump in the throat as one realised the moment. Having watched The Dambusters Movie more than a Dozen times, the reality of what happened here hit home. Meanwhile, The Locals use the Dam as part of a Circuitous Walk in the Park. It took the full hour to walk from one end to the other and back. Last time Marg and Hector approached from the overspill lake past the old pen-stock. Dr. Stan did nip down there for a quick look.

Soest Bier-Traveller (47)Soest Bier-Traveller (39)

Soest Bier-Traveller (57)Soest Bier-Traveller (58)

Soest Bier-Traveller (59)Soest Bier-Traveller (55)

Collected at the agreed time, same taxi, different Driver, we were back in less time and €24.00. €16.00 each is what I was expecting to collect for the overall trip. €24.00 confused the Hector who tried to convince the Driver that it was only €16.00 on the way down. Eventually Jonathan suggested I recalculate. Oops.

Soest Bier-Traveller (77)Peter and Kenny were sat at the Bar awaiting The Möhnesee Four for our Table Reservation at 20.00. Our Table was upstairs in the room I had asked about earlier. There was a Familiar Accent, the Waitress. Vicki from Dumbarton introduced herself. Married to the Brewer at Bräuhaus Zwiebel she is now part of the Soest Community. We were well looked after for the rest of the evening.

Soest Bier-Traveller (19)Soest Bier-Traveller (81)

For the First and Last time on Hector Bounces Back, Hector would eat German Cooking. There is no Curry House in Soest, a Business Opperchancity. As much as I write about the need for Seasoning, the Försterteller was much enjoyed on Visit #1. Ten Years After, Pork, with More Pork and Cheese proved to be Too Salty! I kid you not. There would be Curry tomorrow in Düsseldorf.

Soest Bier-Traveller (4)Soest Bier-Traveller (3)

Eventually we were the only Customers left on this Sunday evening. We adjourned to the Bar downstairs to partake of further Helles. Schnapps appeared. An excellent evening. Great Bier and Superb Service. Vicki, thank you.

Breakfast of Champions

Having been treated like Royalty at Ganesha I tried to make the Rendezvous at Gaffel, Alter Markt. No sign of anyone, yet Neil texted to say he was there. Who sits Inside through the Back at Gaffel? We were finally Five. Given Peter’s lack of mobility, we decided to visit more Kölsch houses in the Immediate Vicinity. Sünner am Walfish was closed, for a holiday. In the height of Summer? Mühlen was covered in Polythene, renovations under-way here.

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (35)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (37)

Päffgen, as opposed to other Variants of the same name, have a Kölsch House in Salzgass. Somehow I had never been here before. A Traditional Venue with a Kobi who evidently was consuming as much as he was delivering. The Schnorrteller, The Sponge Plate, is a Hoot on The Menu. A Free Plate for Kids who then Scrounge what they can from their Parents. Cost: €0.00.

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (40)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (43)

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (34)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (42)

At the top of Salzgasse is Pfaffen. They wanted us to stand inside or out. The Tables were for Diners, most were unoccupied. Peter needed a seat and so we were allocated a Squeeze of a Table on the right as one enters. How Five Chaps were expected to sit at this we do not know. The Kölsch was undrinkable, far too Perfumed, Pils-like. It was left. Time to leave Peter for a few hours.

A Keller

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (46)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (47)

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (49)Hector has been to the Sünner Brauerei Twice, both times on the Weihnachtsmarkt Trips. Being Summer, the usual Bier-Keller was closed. We were shown seats in the open area beside the Brewery, A Keller by any other reference. With Suitable Shade, this was pleasant way to pass an hour or so. Sünner Kölsch may be not have the Bite compared to others, but is by no means the worst. We had just experienced that.

Braustelle-Ehrenfeld

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (52)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (53)

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (55)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (57)

Hector has sampled some Outrageous Bier brewed by Braustelle, the Hausbraueri in Ehrenfeld, the Köln Suburb, most notably at The Bradford Alefest in 2012. Caulfield at 10.5% was beyond Funny. Today we were more down to Earth. Helios (4.8%) is an Unfiltered Kölsch. Sharp, Dry and Hoppy it is quite a departure from the normal Köln Fayre. A Rauchbier was listed on their board at an unknown abv, still it had to be tried. Pleasantly Cool and Dry, we kept waiting for the Schlenkerla Moment. It never came. It did remind me of an unknown Bier I was given in Hamburg in 1976. My ‘Uncle’s’ name was Arthur.

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (58)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (56)

There was Third Bier which Dr. Stan and Kenny saw fit to sample, however, Neil and Hector were off. Köln-Sud was calling.

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (60)There is a direct tram from Ehrenfeld to Severinstrasse, what luck. Walking down Severinstrasse, as I had done only a few hours previously, the Block I thought the Himalaya was on proved to have no Curry house. Then Masala Hut came into view. This proved to be the same Venue. The Plan for the rest of the evening took a new turn.

I have arrived at Zum Alten Brauhaus on a Saturday Night to find it – closed – for a Private Function. Not tonight, a suitable table with a good view of the TV was in sight of the Bar. Football, again? The World Cup Final was Last Week! A weakened FC Bayern won on Penalties.

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (63)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (66)

Peter texted to say he was staying in for the rest of the evening. Kenny and Dr. Stan soon caught us up and what was expected to be The Final Session of the Day was well under-way.

Some time before 23.00 Three went South towards The Chlodwigplatz Tram Haltestelle, Hector walked to the Northern end of The Block for Curry-Heute #2. A Good Decision.

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (71)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (70)

Thereafter I walked back down Severinstrasse to find The Remains of The Day encamped in Früh em Veedel. And so for the Final Kölsch of Hector Bounces Back was consumed. Enough Kölsch.

Hector Bounces Back – Day 1 – Köln

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (13)How does One get out of an Ibis from the Sixth Floor, with luggage, when both elevators are constantly full? Ten Minutes or more were lost here.

Where is the entrance to Brouckere Tram Stop? The exit is clear. I ended up walking down to Bourse to catch the Tram to Zud. More time lost. As Dr. Stan, Kenny and Hector were sitting in different parts of the ICE to Köln there was no rendezvous. I made the Train with minutes to spare, not The Hector Way.

Kenny was staying in the Altstadt, Dr. Stan and Hector were at the Ibis at Barbarossaplatz, now City. I had phoned last night to verify that we could ckeck-in on our early afternoon arrival. Dr. Stan went back into Town to meet Kenny, Hector needed Fed, this meant Curry-Heute, Ganesha turned out to be Very Impressive.

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (1)The first Kölsch of Hector Bounces Back was consumed at Gaffel am Dom. From here we moved to Früh am Dom. The latter has a definite edge.  The Gravity Dispensing must also help.  In Hector’s Humble Opinion there is only One Kölsch better than Früh, – Reissdorf.

Crossing Domplatz, One is always in Awe of the Sheer Verticality of the Dom. Some of it is now White-almost in colour. This building is destined to have Scaffolding forever.

There was a Queue

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (2)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (3)

A Line of People with Suitcases, Large Bags, Anything, had formed at the top end of Domplatz where those with Issues hold their Displays. There is a virtually constant anti-Israeli Banner. Given the events currently unfolding in Gaza this would have been receiving more attention than usual, if not for The Queue. At a pre-set time for around €15.00, Food was being distributed to those in need. Surely a very strange way to conduct such an activity. Those in line did not like the attention, the Distributors wanted no Photos. So why hold this here?

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (5)Kleiner Griechenmarkt, the Home of Reissdorf, has not been visited for four years. The Staff kept changing, once upon a time I used to be greeted by name on entry. No Krystal, who is the Lady on the Homepage. This Venue did not embrace the smoking ban effectively. The Bar Area remained smoking and the clean air was in the far away rooms, away from The Action. When their new premises, Zum Alten Bräuhaus, opened in Köln Sud that was it, we never returned, until today.

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (9)Alighting at Postrasse, we introduced Kenny to The Tardis, which is how it feels when Elevator emerges on to the pavement.

Sitting at The Bar, all was well. I reckoned by now that given the continual service of Food, this area would have be smoke-free. This Venue is now non-smoking throughout. I shall most certainly be returning to what has been my Favourite Köln Venue for many years.

Kenny noticed immediately that Reissdorf Kölsch has more to it than its Rivals. More Body, Seemingly Thicker, Slightly Darker and Maltier, More-ish.

There are Two other People in This Saga Today

Officially – Day 1 – as The Belgium Leg was Three of us getting here, Neil and Peter flew into Weeze this afternoon. Neil announced he was staying in, his decision. Peter would rendezvous with us eventually.

Remember Sion

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (15)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (18)

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (21)Kenny had disappeared for a while, battery problems. Hector carries a Back-up. Kenny’s Handy does not have a Universal Fitting. Dr. Stan and Hector were alone in Sion for a while, then we were Four. New Blood. Peter had no Piece of Paper. Unglaublich.

Köln Sud

Despite Curry for Brunch, Hector had a notion. As we bade Farewell, I jumped in a Taxi. Severinstrasse Bitte. The New U Bahn Line still does not go beyond Heumarkt where the most astonishing U Bahn Station now exists. This rivals Westminster Underground Station.

Where Severinstrasse came from I do not know, I had not checked any Reliable Websites before entering the Taxi. With a few detours thanks to the ongoing works, I alighted at the Top End of this Wonderful Street. The Curry Café – Himalaya – is what I was looking for. I failed to find it. No Huge Bhaji for Hector.  I did spot the new U Bahn entrance virtually outside the Zum Alten Bräuhaus, Reissdorf’s aforementioned New Venue. This was closed, as was the Indian Curry Basmati House across the street.

HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (26)HBB Koeln Bier-Traveller (27)

It was late, but not too late. Früh em Veedel still had a couple of customers. I became One more, for One. Note to Dr. Stan, his Favourite Früh House is open late.

A Twenty Minute wait for a Tram back to Barbarossaplatz or a Walk? A bit of both, with Marg on the Phone to keep me amused. More Kölsch tomorrow.

Hector Bounces Back – Day -1 – Brussel & Brugge

Brugge Bier-Traveller (2)Brugge Bier-Traveller (3)

Brugge Bier-Traveller (4)There was Curry-Heute for Breakfast, far better than paying €10.00 to an Ibis. Whilst I was Dining, Kenny announced that he was back at Cantillon, a bit early. Hector arrived bang on the 13.30 Rendezvous Time. A Bottle of Kriek and Two Glasses was proved by Dr. Stan. Kenny had slowed down. We missed the intended Train to Brugge, the Ticket Machines were not Helpful, nor was the unequal scheduling of the Brugge Trains to both being in the first half of the hour.

The Inter City to Brugge was like a Sauna. We were melting. Let’s move Carriage. Very clever.

Walking from the Station, we passed the Touristy Bits before entered Estamine de la Garre. Doris, Waitressing Upstairs, asked if there were no seats below as we climbed the stairs. I have never sat anywhere but the Mezzanine. They have a new Bar up here, Taps.

Brugge Bier-Traveller (6)The House Bier – Garre – is the usual starting point. At 10.5% a Frightful Start to the day, however it was now late afternoon. This Bier is deceptively Quaffable but is treated with the respect it deserves. Hanssens Geuze was the follow-up. Not a Brand one comes across everyday but always available at this Venue. As Sour as Bier can be, One either loves this Lambic style or One does not. Not a Session Ale by any means, a Treat to Savour.

Brugge Bier-Traveller (8)Brugge Bier-Traveller (9)

To Temper the extreme price of the Bier, small Bowls of Gouda accompanied each round. No Celery Salt this time.

Brugge Bier-Traveller (11)Brugge Bier-Traveller (10)

Across the Marktplatz which impresses as much as Brussel’s Grand Place, maybe more we headed to Daisy’s. T’Brugs Beertje as it is correctly called is The Bier Institution in Brugge.

Brugge Bier-Traveller (15)Brugge Bier-Traveller (19)

Hector had emailed Daisy a couple of weeks back to ascertain if the Venue was in fact open today and if Daisy herself would be working. A fifty percent success was the outcome. Daisy promised me that – Tom The Barman – would look after us.

We took a table in the rear, is this place ever quiet? The overall volume throughput our visit was not helped by the presence of Weans. Children should nether be seen or heard when Hector is on vacation.

Hanssens Kriek

Brugge Bier-Traveller (16)Brugge Bier-Traveller (17)

Hector’s Absolutely Favourite Belgian Bier. Even more Sour than the Cantillon equivalent, this Bier gives off huge amounts of Cinnamon yet it is of course Cherry based. This was followed by another Bottle of Hanssens Kriek. One can have too much of a good thing. Hector did drink Three Bottles of this Bier, Once. It’s not a good idea and I do not refer to the strength.

Brugge Bier-Traveller (18)Bastogne Pale Ale a 5% Hoppy Bier from Brasserie de Bastogne brought this session to a close. If this was available on Draught back home it would be a certain winner. An Astonishing Contrast with the Kriek yet Cheek-Sucking is the quality created by both.

We had to return to Brussel in time for the Ritual hat was disrupted last evening by the early close of Toone. Taking our seats in the usual spot, the raised seats opposite the Bar, the intake of Kwak was resumed. More Cheese. This Venue was much quieter than I have ever seen it over the Two Days. The Majority sat in the outside area in the lane. Indoors the Air is Cleaner. Joy.

Hector Bounces Back : Day -2 – Brussel

The Prologue

Hector Bounces Back, a title partly inspired by the fact that there was no Hector’s Horrible Holiday in 2013 and that a night in Soest (Moehnesee) was planned. Day 1 is officially on Friday, however Kenny and Hector knew Dr. Stan would be in Brussel en route. He doesn’t fly these days.

Brussel Bier-Traveller (2)To enable Hector’s First ever Eurostar London-Brussel Experience, Two nights in Brussel were conceived, and a night in Crawley to facilitate catching a morning train from St. Pancras. Kenny was on an overnight bus, Dr. Stan a morning train from Glasgow. He would arrive in Brussel later.

The Ibis St Catherine proved to have the best deal on single rooms, a hotel Dr. Stan claimed one could see from Toone, a favourite Watering Hole. How he thought this remained a mystery as Kenny and Hector checked in just after 14.00.

Brussel Bier-Traveller (16)Brussel Bier-Traveller (15)

The First Bier of the Trip was destined to be at Cantillon, the Geuze. This is a Lambic, brewed with Yeast provided by prevailing winds. As Sour as Bier can be a long time favourite. It is years since I was here, on Hector’s Hollandisch Hootenany it was a National Holiday the day we spent in Brussel. It could be as far back as The Bon Accord Trip. Cantillon opens on workdays only and closes at 17.00. At €7.00 per 0.75l this is the most affordable place on Earth to drink Cantillon Bier. Why do The Majority of Brewers charge street prices at their Taps? No messing.

Brussel Bier-Traveller (18)Brussel Bier-Traveller (20)

With limited time, Kenny and Hector went on to share the Kriek. Again Sour, but with an infusion of Cherries. Cinnamon is what I get from this Bier. Truly wonderful stuff.

Brussel Bier-Traveller (21)Part Museum, part Brewery, Cantillon do Tours. A group of American Weans were making far too much noise when they sat down after their tour. They hated the Bier, but drank it anyway. This reminds me of my Stagg Trip.

Dr. Stan had suggested he would meet us after 17.00, nearby Moeder Lambic was an obvious rendezvous point. The same group of Americans had arrived before us and were getting a somewhat dubious talk by a compatriot.

Brussel Bier-Traveller (27)With Hunners of Biers to choose from on Draught, the choice is not simple. Moeder Fudder (sic) was on the Specials List. I was promised by the Doris that it would have American Hops. It did, what was expected and also relieved me of a ridiculous sum of cash. Cantillon Framboise completed the very short session here. Lots of Bier, not necessarily in the Style desired or a price a sensible person would pay.

Brussel Bier-Traveller (30)Brussel Bier-Traveller (31)

Brussel Bier-Traveller (32)Dr. Stan was in Belgium but not at Moeder Lambic. We moved to a new Rendezvous Point, a Pub I was taken to on The Bon Accord Trip adjacent to the Manneken Pis. I remembered the Locus not the name.

Poechenellekelder

Hector found himself alone. Kenny was off to charge his phone, still no Dr. Stan. A little Rodenbach would pass the time. Dark with a distinctive almost Tangy/Fruity Flavour, this surprisingly always goes down well. Hopus was a safe follow up, the clue is in the name. By this time we were Three.

Dr. Stan admitted to going to The Wrong Ibis, the Central, which can be seen from Toone.

Brussel Bier-Traveller (36)Brussel Bier-Traveller (35)

Brussel Bier-Traveller (41)Brussel Bier-Traveller (42)

Kenny and Hector interrupted the session for a Kebab next door. Kebabs are way better in Europe, better Bread, Better Meat. Here the Service was poor, The Chap thought we were spying on him when I took photos. The place had video surveillance, so who was spying on who?

Taras Boulba – Brasserie de la Senne, brought the visit to Poechenellekelder to a close. Dr. Stan had some Cheese, covered in Celery Salt. I had forgotten just how wonderful this is. Kenny was taken aback thinking it was Pepper. The combination of Salt and Celery took him by surprise. He had Naked Cheese.

Toone

We had to wander through The Grand Place just to feel like Tourists do. George Square it ain’t.

Brussel Bier-Traveller (63)Brussel Bier-Traveller (61)

Toone lies just off the Grand Place, Kwak awaits. Dr. Stan and Hector have put a few Kwaks away on these premises dating back to 2003. Draught of course, and still served in the Round Bottomed Glass, hence the Wooden Frame, this Bier is so far away from my norm. Dark, Stronger than should be comfortable we were set for a Final Session. Mein Host announced that he was closing at 22.00. On a Wednesday, in the height of Summer? They had just had their Rest Day. They don’t need the money.

Brussel Bier-Traveller (67)Brussel Bier-Traveller (68)

We couldn’t go to bed yet

Out the back of Toone lies Delirium Tremens. It was Mobbed, full of Weans, and Too Noisy. Something more Sedate please.

Brussel Bier-Traveller (78)Brussel Bier-Traveller (86)

A walk through the arcade took us to Morte Subite. How much better this, and everywhere else for that matter, is with the Ban on Smoking. Kenny tells me the Greeks have voted to bring smoking back. If so, next February’s Trip to Athens may be the lastBrussel Bier-Traveller (87).

The Kriek here is not as Sour as Cantillon, only One Other Kriek is, and that’s tomorrow’s treat. How we ever bought the Vases of this in 2003, who knows?

We had to buy our own Cheese. Kenny sampled some more Celery Salt.

Maybe he’s starting to get the hang of it…

Brussel Bier-Traveller (90)Brussel Bier-Traveller (88)

The Nightcap

Brussel Bier-Traveller (14)Chouffe Houblon is what we hoped to have on Draught at Delirium Tremens. Dr. Stan had a Voucher for his Complimentary Ibis Drink, Chouffe Houblon was available in bottles. And so this Delightfully Dry, Hoppy Bier brought Day -2 to a close.

Tomorrow Brugge.

G-RAF – Glasgow Real Festival 2014 – Day 3

GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (14)The Day began with a better than expected Curry was served at Dakhin in Candleriggs, a short walk from The Briggait where the First Glasgow Real Ale Festival in Yonks was being held. The Majority of The Company had agreed that today we would be Paying Customers, and enjoy what was left of the Bier. There was Plenty of Ale left. Dark Star’s (Partridge Green, West Sussex) American Pale Ale had finally come on, that would keep The Company amused for a while.

GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (6)GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (15)

Craig had decided to work another full day at the Fest. Neil too turned up for Duty. Howard, Dr. Stan, Jonathan and Kenny were Duty-bound to work. Euan was working too. Tracey would keep Howard Happy. Where was Robin?

GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (1)GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (2)

GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (19)GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (28)

Mr. Holden and Mr. Boyd were hard at work at The Cider Bar, though Ricky would have to leave us mid-afternoon. There was a chance this Festival might now make a Profit. This left Hector, Yvonne and Mags as The Three until the arrival of The Reasonable Club, Craig’s – Other Company.

Has Bernard gone yet?

GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (47)GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (52)

Today Neil and Stewart both had a shot at Pulling their First Hand-pumped Ale. A Handy Skill at a Beer Festival. Next Year…

From the Conception of G-RAF it was decreed that there shall be no Live Music, indeed it was felt that No Music was required at all. In Bayern where The Majority are seated by The Thousand, Bands make the day. We have all observed that at British Beer Festivals as soon as The Band starts, the Punters leave the Main Room. It is also Profit straight out the door paying for a Band. I had previously congratulated The Organisers for letting us Chat and not be Blasted.

GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (10)GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (3)

Imagine my Shock when the Caledonian Brewery Pipe Band emerged from The Toilet Corridor to entertain The Assembly. At least The Sets were short and the Tunes were different form the Standard Hampden Park Fayre.

GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (26)GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (27)

GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (24)GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (11)

Scapa Flow (Highland Brewing, Swannay, Orkney) replaced the American Pale Ale. Oakham’s (Peterborough, Cambridgeshire) Scarlet Macaw was wiped out and Citra never appeared. Kenny may have more to say on this.

GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (8)GRAF Day3 Bier-Traveller (9)

Once more, over Five Hundred Peeps had crossed The Threshold, and probably more. The Organisers were well-pleased. Taking over all off the SECC next year was mentioned. Olympia! said someone who was getting carried away. Yes indeed – Hector offered – and lets get a Sponsor to Fly Everyone down to London. The Briggait is an Excellent Venue and held the Numbers in relative Comfort. More Benches and Tables could surely be provided, but this Fest already had more than the Norm at a Scottish Beet Festival.

Time flies when One is Having Fun. Hector always had One Eye on The Clock. An early rise, a flight.

When the Festival was Officially Closed, my Staff Badge was put to good use. However, I declined the offer of Pizza, Italia calls…

Glasgow Real Ale Festival 2014 – G-RAF Day 2

P1140311The Plan today was to work a Split Shift: 14.00 – 18.00 then 20.00 to Closing Time. This would permit Hector to satisfy his other Source of Pleasure on the First Full Day of the Summer Vacation. Arriving in Candleriggs just after 14.00, both Dakhin and Dabba were found to have open doors but were in fact – closed. I tried two more Venues selling British Fayre but walked out having been totally ignored. This was not a great advertisement for Glasgow Hospitality.

GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (1)As it happens, the Festival was not opening its doors until 15.00 due to the fact that other Businesses were in operation within The Briggait and we were in effect blocking their access. Well that’s more or less what I was told. There was time for a Swift Half before the Shift began. Oakham’s Scarlet Macaw (Peterborough, Cambridgeshire) a Favourite Ale in The Company was now on. Green Devil, also Oakham, was still on but would not last much longer.

The Man Who Knows confirmed that we had used only 20% of the Stock yesterday. There would be plenty of Ale left for Saturday. Surely by the end of this evening Everything would be tapped?

GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (9)Yvonne and Tracey were manning the Reception with Dr. Stan. Mags and Neil turned up for their First Shifts, they too were set to process the Arrivees at the Door. A Glass, a Festival Programme with a page commemorating Dr. Rick who is no longer with us, and a Colour-coded Wristband were issued to each Customer. I believe People had to pay to enter for the second time, with a reduction for bringing their own glass (from Yesterday).

GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (2)GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (7)

Euan was also in the building and joined Alan, Craig and Hector at Bar A-K. Rob of Forth Valley CAMRA was also with us, a First for Hector and Rob to be behind the same Bar. At opening time there was Ten of us behind the Bar, nobody could see the Ales. Time for a Break. Howard (Bar L-Z) a Half of Scarlet Macaw please. Ricky and Alistair were on their Break already. With Jonathan and Kenny on The Floor complete with Cyborg Communication Devices and Stewart allocating Staff, The Company was almost complete. Where was Robin?

GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (6)GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (5)

Enter The G-RAF

GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (3)John from The Far East entered The Briggait suitably attired for the occasion. I did hear someone ask – Why is he wearing a Giraffe Costume?

Hawkshead’s Five Hop (Stavely, Cumbria) was one of the first Ales to go. Their Lakeland Lager disappeared quickly too, its lesser strength suiting many. The Lakeland Lager made a quick reappearance. I found myself standing mostly on the extreme right of Bar A-K and so poured little of Derek’s Kelburn range, and even less of Orkney, but plenty of Highland. Marg and Hector visited both Orkney Breweries last year. Our allegiance lies in Swannay, not Quoyloo.

Derek Noon Bitter

GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (15)GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (13)

GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (14)Say it aloud! Derek has been brewing Dark Moore for some years. Those who know, get it. Hector dreamt up Derek-Noon-Bitter and gave Derek immediate rights to use this, on one condition – Derek brews a Pale, (New Zealand/American) Hoppy Ale at over 5.0% with a Citrus finish. He insists his family would kill him if he did. Today I offered Derek a new Opperchancity to corner the market – Ale Brewed with Methi. Now imagine how Dry and Flavoursome this would be? Derek admits to being Too Traditional. Are there any Brewmeisters out there wishing to try? Let The Hector know.

A Taxi for 4 at 6

GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (8)Mr. Holden managed to prize himself away from his Post long enough to announce that he had arranged a Taxi to take us to The New Karahi Palace, A Bridge too Far for He and Alistair to walk. In the end, Dr. Stan stayed at his post for Kenny’s predicted Five until Seven o’clock Rush, which never came. Business had been steady all afternoon. There were no queues a la Paisley. The Briggait was continually proving itself to be Spacious, Bright, Airy, a Perfect venue.

I returned from an Excellent Curry to meet up with a Couple who had arrived just as I was departing for Dinner. Scarlet Macaw was still the Ale of Choice. Howard and Tracey joined us and then Neil who was discovering Breaks were Mandatory.

GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (10)GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (4)

Alan and Stewart had realised that many of those who were there at The Start of the Day were packing it in and so my 20.00 scheduled return was beneficial. We had been well staffed over the Two Days so far.

GRAF Day2 Bier-Traveller (16)Still, many of the Casks were held in reserve. At times it felt like a certain chain who advertise Ales as – Coming Soon. However, at times they don’t even have the Ale in the building and usually don’t have the staff capable of putting it on. We had The Man Who Knew, and he was still saying nothing. Chaps were asking about the Allendale Casks. Surely they would be on tonight? Indeed they were, but The Chaps had gone. The Man Who knew explained his Mathematical Approach to Tapping and Venting. If the Festival is overloaded, then all unsold Ale gets poured down the sink at the end. Once Vented, that’s it, the Ale cannot be sold on, Profit oot-the-windae’. After The Arches Beer Festival there were no risks being taken at this Fest. There was plenty of choice of all Ale styles, maybe not Everyone’s Favourite. Dark Star’s Revelation (Partridge Green, West Sussex) was keeping The Company in Bar A-K more than Happy. The American Pale Ale would hopefully be – Available Soon.

By the end of Day 2, over Eight Hundred People had entered The Briggait in addition to yesterday’s Five Hundred. The Festival was a Success, there was still Another Day, and there was plenty of Ale. Kenny was indeed The Cat who got The Cream. Jonathan and Howard were in Modest Mode. How Happy were The Company? Never have so many Happy Chappies been Blogged.

Glasgow Real Ale Festival 2014 – G-RAF Day 1

When Jonny Met Kenny

GRAF Day1 bier-traveller (1)Eighteen years is the number bandied about since the Glasgow CAMRA Branch last held a Beer Festival. So, the 1997 Winter Ale Festival in the Old Fruit Market doesn’t count? Back then Hector knew few CAMRA Members, this would change when I started working at the Foreign Bar at the Annual Paisley Beer Festivals thereafter. It was here that Howard first became aware of Hector, – so knowledgeable at The Foreign Bar. So Knowledgeable that an Irish Chap wrote to What’s Brewing singing the praises of ‘Hector’ and Alistair Boyd at the Cider Bar. But which Alistair Boyd? There are Two of them!

GRAF Day1 bier-traveller (25)GRAF Day1 bier-traveller (23)

So Paisley, Troon and Alloa can all run Annual Ale Festivals, even Aberdeen and Larbert have got in on the act. Not Glasgow, until Kenny introduced himself to The Company. First Contact was late one Saturday in the 3 Judges when Dr. Stan introduced Hector to Kenny. Weeks later at Loch Fyne Ales, Kenny approached this Commentator with the immortal introduction – You’re Hector who writes Curry-Heute! Instant Friendship.

Jonathan has been part of The Company for some Eight Years during which time he and Howard have discussed sporadically the need for a Glasgow Ale Fest. Bring in Kenny and there was Spontaneous Combustion. Jonathan and Kenny became the Catalyst which made today possible. Meanwhile Howard had found himself installed in The Chair of Glasgow CAMRA. FYI – Hector and Yadgar remain in the wings, awaiting the go ahead for the selling of Curry. Not this year.

The Next Generation

GRAF Day1 bier-traveller (2)Capturing The Briggait (Bridgegate to non-Weegies) was certainly a Coup. The Municipal Halls do not have the raw potential this Cavernous Construction presented. It is also a building which has been under-utilised since its renovation some Twenty Years back into some sort of Artists’ Quarters. The installation of the Stillage began on Sunday, the Ales being Racked through the week. Without the Technical Expertise of our Paisley CAMRA Buddies the Festival could well have been a non-starter. Indeed, CAMRA Members from all over Scotland would be staffing the Three Bars, even The Man from Bradford would be there to, do, whatever he does, at Ale Festivals.

GRAF Day1 bier-traveller (4)The Festival opened to The Trade at 15.00 this afternoon and at 17.00 to The Public. Hector was completing his last few hours before the Long Summer Break. Just the Eight Weeks in case anyone hasn’t heard. At 18.00 Dr. Stan and Ricky – The Man from Bradford – took a Break to meet up with Hector for a Curry at Charcoals Café. Hector was anticipating working behind the Foreign Bar, commencing at 20.00.

The Organisers had everything in place. They could not predict that Olaf would arrive at 14.00 today, days late and one hour before Opening Time, without the promised Kegs of Deutsche Bier. This left One Hour to chill the modest array of Bottles that had been brought. A Kick in The Teeth. I can imagine The Angst.

GRAF Day1 bier-traveller (6)GRAF Day1 bier-traveller (7)

On entering The Briggait, Peter was on the Desk along with Yvonne. The necessary Paperwork was signed, then Tracey looked after me in the Staffroom finding my ID Card and securing a Staff Polo resplendent with the G-RAF Motif. Williams Bros. (Alloa) were sponsoring the event and so their Logo was also printed proudly. Volunteer– it said on the right hand sleeve. Yes, Everyone working at this Festival was doing so on a Voluntary Basis. Why? It’s Fun! One also gets to sample The Fayre, payment enough. All of The Company would be present except The Crawley Two at some point in the next Three Days.

All Our Favourite Ales

As The Organisers are part of The Company it should come as no surprise that many of the Ales on offer this week will be The Ales We Like! As many Hops in a Glass as possible. However, the Masses have to be catered for and other Tastes too. What is fair to say, particularly to Scottish Brewers, if your Ale was not here, you’re not doing it right. Take a lead from Oakham (Peterborough, Cambridgeshire), Hawkshead (Stavely, Cumbria), Ossett (Ossett, W. Yorkshire) and Dark Star (Partridge Green, West Sussex) Oh, these are all English Breweries. What will Ricky be having then?

Stewart was in charge of allocating Staff to their various tasks. The Foreign Bar was combined with the Cider Bar, the latter as ever under the charge of Mr. Alistair Boyd. Ricky was parked there too. There lies Madness, I would be happier well away from this. The Stillage was in two parts. The Casks were arranged A-K on the left and L-Z on the right. Dark Star and Hawkshead on one side, Ossett and Oakham on the other. Howard was working L-Z, Stewart led me to A-L where Alan had been appointed Bar Manager. Craig was there too. Three of The Company, plus others, behind the same Bar. Here we go…

GRAF Day1 bier-traveller (3)GRAF Day1 bier-traveller (19)

No more words, other than these are the people I know who were there on Thursday. Even Colin Valentine, National CAMRA Chairman, in case you don’t know who is standing on Ricky’s right.  I saw Robin depart, the first and last time I saw him.

By the end of Day 1, over Five Hundred had crossed the Threshold. The G-RAF had been built and They had come. Despite holding back a considerable Stock of Untapped Casks, we wondered how there would be enough Ale left for Saturday. There was only One Man in the House who knew how the Stock Control worked, and he was saying nothing.
