Glasgow Real Ale Festival (G-RAF) 2016 – Day 1

G-RAF 2016 Day1 Bier-Traveller (22)G-RAF 2016 Day1 Bier-Traveller (21)

June 23rd, 2016, the day the citizens of the UK decide whether or not to stay in the EU. This also happens to be the first day of the Glasgow Real Ale Festival (G-RAF), the third in the modern era to be held at The Briggait. The Briggait affords light which many UK Festival Venues do not, the locus is therefore superb especially at is time of year when sunset is after 21.30.

G-RAF 2016 Day1 Bier-Traveller (6)One hundred and fifty Cask Ales are on offer this year from Great Britain and Ireland. Two bars split the Ales on an alphabetical basis: A-J on the east, K-Z on the west. On the south side of the hall lies the Foreign Bier and Cider Bars.

G-RAF 2016 Day1 Bier-Traveller (3)G-RAF 2016 Day1 Bier-Traveller (2)

Having worked at the lower end of the alphabet in 2014, and the foreign Bar last year, Hector is more than pleased to volunteer at Alan’s Bar this year serving the higher end. This means we have Marble (Manchester), Oakham (Peterborough) and our very own Kelburn (Glasgow) Ales under our jurisdiction. Those who are referred to as – The Company – throughout this Website will be found manning the West Bar over the next three days.

The Festival was open to – The Trade – for the first hour, it was pleasing to spend time with the staff of The State Bar, a change of roles. The State Bar have sponsored the glasses this year. It is fitting to remind the reader that one person from The State Bar cannot be with us. Keep the faith.

Jason Lyons, The State Bar, Glasgow – Farewell, Jason. R.I.P.

Kim told each of the Regulars as we arrived last night – it was a matter of when, today we were told the tragic news, Jason Lyons has passed away.

State Bar Jason Lyons Bier-Traveller.com State Bar Bier-Traveller (4)I am proud that I knew Jason and that he knew me, our humour was in perfect harmony. As with the best of Landlords, Jason knew all of his Regulars.  The State Bar was first awarded Pub of the Year by West of Scotland CAMRA in 2012, Jason realised that he could do even more for his customers.  Our Group have identified Ales in our travels around the UK Beer Festivals and beyond. Jason hassled his suppliers to ensure they were provided,  Jason too unearthing some Great Ales.  His determination to order the very best brought more POTY Awards in 2014 and 2015.

I last saw Jason on May 25th, the night the Oakham Staff were up from Peterborough.  What a night.

State Bar Bier-Traveller (2)We had missed Jason over the past two weeks, however, it was only on Friday that the severity of his illness was relayed. This has been a sudden and tragic loss.  Our Group feel for Nancy and the rest of his family.

Jason, your contribution to the Glasgow Real Ale Scene will never be forgotten. Nancy has lost her Son, Peter his Brother, we have lost our Dear Friend.

An afternoon in Brighton, late evening in Crawley

brighton-bier-traveller-comThis is the eve of The Rome Trip officially entitled Hectoris Hiatus Horribilis, as close as we could get to – Hector’s Horrible Holidays. Due to the antisocial flight times from Scotland, Edinburgh specifically, it was conceived that The Rome Trip would kick off in Crawley. Some took the train, not Howard and Hector who flew to Gatwick. Having checked in at our respective Berths for the night, it was off to Brighton with a stop-off at Burgess Hill to see Lady Maggie, Lord Clive of Crawley was at work in The City.

brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-1The Evening Star is usually the first and sometimes also last venue on a Day Trip to Brighton, there have been a few over the years, The premises where the Dark Star Brewery began, this remains a major outlet, though with the relocation of the Brewery to Partridge Green, one has been there to pay homage twice at the new Brewery Tap.

Dark Star’s – American Pale Ale – (4.8%) was considered to be the best Cask Ale on offer, one always hopes for Revelation, perhaps later. With New World Hops still not too shabby but it does lack the bite of it’s Big Brother.

brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-3brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-2

Sharing our table was a Chap busy brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-4at his laptop. Conversation broke out, Howard recognised something about what he was working on. The Chap was arranging the Bier for an upcoming Festival, Howard asked if he knew Alex Hall, this was he. So it goes. He is a member of the British Guild of Beer Writers, whatever that is.

Hector has toured The Pubs of Brighton with Lord Clive in previous times, today was Sir Howard’s Trip, Hector in tow. The Basketmakers Arms was dismissed, no doubt a fine Pub, but as with the majority of UK Pubs, nothing Special on offer, we – The Company – do not seek English Bitter.

brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-5brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-6

How I have not been to the North Laine Brewhouse before is now a mystery, an excellent venue, bright and spacious, though I suspect that mid afternoon, midweek, was seeing it at a time which suited our requirements. One assumes this place could be Trendy and therefore Busy at night.

brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-13brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-15

The Search for Hops was answered with the staff recommending their very own – Tap Taketh Over at 5.5%. This Amber Ale was suitably Dry in Flavour but suffered from a Diacetyl after-taste, a problem shared by many a Micro Brewery around the World. I should certainly wish to return here, who knows, their Ale may get better.

brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-16brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-17

The Heart and Hand was again considered but dismissed, the objective was the Brighton Beer Dispensary which looked encouraging as we approached. There was quite a gathering outside given the time of day. With six Cask Taps five of which were on, the choice was simple – Bristol Beer Factory’s – Bristol Export at 5.8% (Bristol, Avon, England). Having sampled five in their range, one always has hopes for another great discovery. This Dark Gold Ale was dangerously quaffable, Maltier than I was hoping for, and despite no serious Hop Hit, was still deemed to be a very Worthy Bier.

brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-23brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-25

We sat to the rear in a Conservatory/Atrium, comfortable, and were intrigued by a group of Mature Ladies who also appeared to be on a Bier Tour of Brighton.

There had to be Curry-Heute.

Somehow I found myself on Preston Street, the same street as where Marg, Hector, Lord Clive and Lady Maggie of Crawley dined on the May Bank Holiday in 2014. This evening it was River Spice’s  Opperchancity to impress.

brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-26brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-27

brighton-may-11-bier-traveller-28The final port of call was up the hill to The Craft Brewing Co who started out in Farringdon, another worthy venue. The Brighton Branch has six Cask Taps, Tiny Rebel (Newport, Wales) is a Brewery held in high esteem, though finding their Bier is difficult. The 5.0% Stop-Dirty Out is a Smoked Stout, not my usual style, but if one cannot appreciate a good Porter having drunk nothing but the produce of a certain Irish Brewery for some twenty years, then…

The optimum train back to Crawley via Three Bridges was chosen, by now Dr. Stan, Craig, Yvonne and Mags – whose celebratory trip this was – should be in Crawley. There was a text en route from Maggie suggesting that the first Hiatus of – The Rome Trip – was now occurring. Hector would be giving up his bed for reasons not clear.

brewery-shades-bier-traveller-1brewery-shades-bier-traveller-3

Brewery Shades has become the Pub of choice in Crawley in the last few years. The occasional night in The Swan may still happen, however, the Ale here is usually way better. This is especially so when Dark Star’s Revelation (5.8%) is available as it was tonight. With Ales in hand, Howard and Hector went off to find Les Autres. Jean, who is scheduled to be Mags’ room-mate at the Wolf Strassenfest this year was also here to introduce herself – to Mags.

brewery-shades-bier-traveller-2brewery-shades-bier-traveller-4

brewery-shades-bier-traveller-5Now it was revealed why Hector was on – The Couch. Booking a hotel on the wrong date is easy, I have never done so, however in the past I have been guilty of booking an Airport Transfer for eight a month early, and train tickets for ten, a day early. It happens. There was no room at The Travelodge, or anywhere else at a sensible price, for Craig and Yvonne this evening.

brewery-shades-bier-traveller-9The last time Hector slept on a settee in Crawley was on the way back from Deutschland during – The Volcano – episode.

Poznan – Day 4

There was talk of hiring a car and driving to the site of Stalag Luft III, pity The Rickmeister did not look at a map before he suggested this, plan abandoned. Instead, there would be a rendezvuous at Van Gogh at 14.30. At least Ricky has found a source of Piwa open before the standard 16.00.

Poznan Bier-Traveller (1)Poznan Bier-Traveller (4)

For reasons those who read yesterdays Blog will appreciate, The Hector had no problem getting to sleep last night. Curry-Heute for once did not feel like a good idea either. Perhaps the late night Herring Rollmops had altered the palate, today had to be a Perogi Day.

Tram 8 which goes from the west side of the Train Station was once again the mode of transport to whisk me across town. The Cathedral Island was the chosen tourist destination, I felt I was making good use of the Four day Ticket I had purchased on Sunday, a pity I was here for five.

Poznan Bier-Traveller (3)Poznan Bier-Traveller (5)

The Cathedral is not the finest piece of architecture I have ever seen, red brick. If I was more interested I would find out if it was always so. I admired the exterior such as it was and headed back to Stare Miasto. Hector rarely enters buildings which are places of worship, there is no sense of purpose for this commentator. Had I not seen enough Mosques and Temples in India to do me for a while. I am still mentioning The India Trip.

Poznan Bier-Traveller (6)It was only a ten minute walk back across the Warta River  to the northern end of Stare Miasto. The first main junction is where Marg and Hector ended up on Night #2 back in October when Google Maps could not cope with the stretch towards the Ibis where only trams can go, round and round, until we were further away from the Ibis than when we started. Now I have the Inner City sussed.

Crossing Stary Rynek it was pleasing to see a bit of sunshine, I could still have done with some warmth, in mid April one has come to hope for better in Continental Europe, but then the Jet Stream has been too far north for about a decade. Temperatures in Europe are nothing like as warm as they were when the Budget Airlines started taking us away so often, it must be – Global Cooling.

Poznan Zascianek Bier=Traveller (2)Poznan Zascianek Bier=Traveller (1)

I walked due east out of Stary Rynek and found another pedestrianised street that had not registered previously, maybe I am still learning my way around. The main pedestrian street, Polwiejska is where I was headed. The Zascianek Restauracja is well down on the right towards Stary Browar. Marg and I had Traditional Polish Fayre last visit, the venue intrigues.

One enters and climbs stairs to the main dining room. Eventually one discovers that the facilities are in a lower room. The lower room is vast in comparison to the upstairs, this would make an excellent venue for another Multi-Tap Bar and compliment Fermentownia which is across the way but a good bit from the cluster around Stary Rynek.

Poznan Zascianek Bier=Traveller (5)Poznan Zascianek Bier=Traveller (6)

Perogi it was, washed won with my usual Sparkling Water. The Dumplings looked poor, deep fried? Reheated? If this was one’s first encounter it would have been off-putting, I know where I shall be having my Perogi next time at – Ratusova. Perhaps by then Zascianek will be a Pub?

Pozna Van Gogh Bier-Traveller (1)Pozna Van Gogh Bier-Traveller (3)

Pub Van Gogh, this was a first visit. Ricky and Stewart were already well into a Bier when I entered, so just how early does this place open? Dangerous.

Pozna Van Gogh Bier-Traveller (5)Pozna Van Gogh Bier-Traveller (4)

With a mere six taps there was a sense of making do. Two of the taps claimed Hops, a choice.

Chmielarz (Browar Zodiak, Polska) at 6.0% kicked off the afternoon session for Hector.  An amber American Pale Ale, this was definitely in the required style, as the name suggests a Hop-presence and without the nasty aftertaste. We were on our own for most of the visit, people should be at work. A young couple came in for one, we were having two, we out-stayed them. Perhaps the Nutcrackers put them off. Stewart and Ricky had a bag of Walnuts, means various were employed to open them.   Bottled Rowing Jack (6.2%) (Ale Browar, Polska) was Hector’s follow up, Stewart had a taste, his first of what Hector believes is the finest Bier brewed in Polska (currently).

Poznan Van Gogh Bier-Traveller (7)Ricky was determined that we would not return to Chmielnik given the prices. Had Dom Piwa not opened late yesterday, we would have been already. From our table in Van Gogh we could see any shutter activity in Dom Piwa.

Open early and with a view of one of my favourite Poznan Venues, Van Gogh is alright.

Pozna DomPiwa Bier-Traveller (3)Pozna DomPiwa Bier-Traveller (5)

I believe I recognised Mein Host in Dom Piwa. We took seats at a high table just off the bar, no stairs would be climbed today. Bottled Rowing Jack (6.2%) (Ale Browar, Polska) it had to be for Stewart. Before today, Stewart had never experienced this Wonderful Bier, he has now.  Lemon Tree (Deer Bear, Polska) at 5.0% was Hector’s choice.  This was an amber, citrus ale, very dry, with grapefruit coming through slowly.

Pozna DomPiwa Bier-Traveller (2)Pozna DomPiwa Bier-Traveller (1)

As much as I like Dom Piwa, this is a stepping stone to Piwna Stopa, or even a fallback if the latter s too busy. Simon, Mein Host was there to greet us, time for The Session to begin, proper.

Poznan Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (10)Bier in whiskey Casks?

Poznan Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (1)Poznan Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (6)

Spotting The Rickmeister trying to crack a nut, Simon presented a pair of tension pliers. Perfect. These were used to hammer the shells open. It was going to be a long night.

Poznan Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (3)There had to be more Meza (6.5%) IPA (Artezan, Polska). I look forward to finding this on Tap someday.

The XXX Rye Quad Reserva (Struise Browars, Belgium) caused a stir. A 10.0% ale aged in bourbon barrels, this was indeed drinking Bier with a Whiskey flavour. A one off experience, to be shared around.

Poznan Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (2)The Komes Baltic Porter (9.0%) (Browar Fortuna, Polska) had to be experienced by the discerning ale drinkers, Ricky passed on this, Stewart loved it.  Having had a sample yesterday when Simon suggested it to the East Lothian Fraternity, even I had a go despite not being in my preferrred style.  Hector does visit – The Dark Side – when the outcome is something special.Poznan Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (18)

Before we joined them there was the matter of a football match.  Hibernian scored, Ricky was happy, hopefully not a bad omen for the Scottish Cup Final.

Simon had another new Piwa for Hector to try.  Apartment Six Flakes American IPA (Raduga, Polska) is 6.0% with an IBU of 75.  It is Blond just, with a big Hop Hit, the aftertaste is on the edge of tolerance.

Poznan Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (1)Somewhat predictably we ended up at Pijalnia Wodka I Piwa. For this company it should have been renamed Wodka and Rollmops. No justification was required, we are on a Trip, no Ladies to say it’s time to go home, the prices are so welcoming, then there’s the matter of the Fish. I’ll be back.

After a day on The Hop, Rollmops and Flavoured Wodka, perfect to set you up for tomorrow. I was determined not to be out at 01.00 again, nay problem. It was 02.00 when Taxi Jan was summoned. His English is not wonderful, by this time of night I can speak uninhibited Deutsch. In fact, I had been ordering at the Bar for the last hour in German, I was in the mood.

Poznan Day 3 – Hellos, Goodbyes, Hellos, Goodnight!

Hector has been in Polska for four days, today there will be company.  Ricky, The Man from Bradford, and Stewart, The Brewer from Ilkley, will finally join The Hector.

Ricky was in touch early this morning informing me that there would be a football match in this city this evening.  Hector had no wish to sit outside and chill, this evening would be Night #5 of Hector Napypals, or would it?

A local publication informed Ricky of a Cheap Curry Lunch at Restauracja Indyiska Shivaz, 14.30 was the agreed rendezvous time.  This still left a couple of hours to wander around Poznan.

Poznan Le Targ Stary Browar Bier-Traveller.comBack in October, Hector and Marg scrutinised Stary Browar, The Old Brewery, in search of a cable to charge my camera, no success here, Saturn in the shopping centre at the Train Station has everything.  We did stop for a coffee at Le Targ in Stary Browar, and so this was repeated, same venue, virtually the same table.  As Marg was not here, I thought I had better have some cake just to establish a ritual.

Poznan Bier-Traveller (2)Outside is Polwiejska, a pedestrianised street which connects the south side of the ring road to Stare Miasto.  This could well be the principal shopping street in Poznan, Fermentownia, a Multi-Tap Bar, lies just off.  I checked that it was still there, one for later.

Hellos

I arrived early at Shivaz hoping to reacquaint myself with Mein Host, different staff, no promised discount for The Hector.  I was shocked when Ricky and Stewart both ordered Polish Eurofizz.  Note, I deliberately do not name it.  There are standards, one is either a Real Ale Twat, or one is not.

P1130979Poznan Chmielnik Bier-Traveller (5)

Knowing that Chmielnik is open before the standard 16.00 Poznan Opening Time, I led The Chaps there through Stary Rynek. The Board looked the same as yesterday. I recommended someone try the Kryz Poludnia (5.%)  NZPA (Browar Reden, Polska) which I had quite enjoyed yesterday.

P1130980Chmielnik Poznan Bier-Traveller (4)

Oki Doki (4.3%) (Pinta, Polska) was first recommended in C4, Katowice back in 2014. This was the day Marg and Hector saw Pendragon in Polska C4 has gone, Pinta has become one of the well established new wave of Polish Brewers.   Suitably Dry and Hoppy, this was a gentle start to the day.

We were sitting in the conservatory at the rear of Chmielnik.  Ricky spotted too that Piwna Stopa lies over the wall at the bottom of the Bier Garden.  Three Chaps sat at a table adjacent, they were speaking English, Pukka English. I was sitting with two Yorkshiremen, there was no interaction, until…

I heard one Chap mention Clydebank, the town where I reside.  I turned rouChmielnik Poznan Bier-Traveller (5)nd and held up my hand.  I was anticipating a – so what? – there was a brief conversation.

Next, I needed something more demanding in terms of Hops and hence Flavour.  This would not be from The Board, Bottle time.  Hop Sasa (5.0%)  (Ale Browar, Polska) is a particular favourite, can this Brewery do wrong?  The first time I had Hop Sasa was in Krakow also in 2014.  Then I found it Sweet after a Doctor Brew equivalent, this afternoon, the Grapefruit was to the fore, success.

It is time to remind the Reader that Hector is on a Trip to Polska, ostensibly with Ricky and Stewart.  Imagine the moment that follows…  It is approaching 18.00, time for The Chaps to head north to the Fitba’.  Classic – HoldenTours.

Goodbye, see you tomorrow.

Having known the score from the outset, Hector, Netbook over the shoulder, headed to Piwna Stopa, where else.  Rowing Jack (6.2%) (Ale Browar, Polska) as has been written many times, is – Hop Heaven, still my favourite Piwa.  No way was I going to spend the rest of the night on this, if I was going to write a coherent Blog (still working on The India Trip), then concentration was required.

Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (4)Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (15)

I had been served by the same Chap who I had seen on the last two days.  Sitting at what I consider to be – my seat – at – my table – a familiar face came into view.  It was Simon, Mein Host.  He recognised me instantly, I cannot work out why.  Simon was straight over; we did some catching up.  I assured him I was here with friends, but they had gone to the football.  A sad story.

The Rowing Jack went off; other people must have been drinking it.  In the fridge was a bottle of Pan Ipani (6.0%) (Trech Kumpli, Polska) as I had at ZUP in Wroclaw a couple of days ago, but on tap.  This Wheat IPA is one to keep looking out for, a great combination of two Bier-styles – IPA and Weizen.  I would love to recapture my taste for Weizen, too often I gag.

Yesterday, the bladder made me take my leave, I felt it too risky to abandon the Netbook.  Piwna Stopa was busier, tables around me had been reserved, I would take my chances.  On my way back from the facilities I heard a – Hello.  It was The Chaps we had seen at Chmielnik.  They were Scottish, hard to believe.  After ten minutes of me standing at their table, I explained how I came to be on my own, I went to collect my belongings.

Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (2)At this point Simon brought a Platter of Meat to my table, a Complimentary Snack, I suggested he follow me to the new table mid-room.  This was a good hand for Hector to deal.  Some of the Meat Cuts were astonishing.  Note to self, next time, order this.

Russel, Clydebank born but ex-military, hence the Pukka voice was in the company of Andy and Leslie from East Lothian.  All are retired and in Poznan to do the same as Hector.  Let the madness commence.

Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (14)Simon sat with us and told the story of how he came to establish Piwna Stopa after his days working in England.  I had to ask if there was another Piwa in the house that I should try, he returned with two bottles.

Meza (6.5%)  is an IPA  (Artezan, Polska).  With an IBU of 70, same as Rowing Jack, Hector was on to a winner.  There had to be more, there was.

Komes Baltic Porter (9.0%) (Browar Fortuna, Polska) was brought for Sandy/Leslie who was keen to discover more Biers in this style.  This was a Piwa to be savoured, a sample came my way, it was excellent, not too sweet even whilst interrupting the excellent Mera IPA.

By now the great tradition of rounds included me.  A tray was brought from the Bar, Russel had other plans for it, result, devastation.  Same again please.  The Reserved Chaps I had encountered this afternoon were now – In The Zone – as was Hector.  When Russel announced that he was switching to Wodka, there was little clue as to what would follow.

Last night, my new Best Buddies had Wodka and Snacks at Pijalnia Wodka I Piwa, we walked the few blocks back to Rynek.  The place was stowed, with The Young.  Nobody bothered, we were in, I insisted on buying the Wodka whilst a Snack was arranged.  Four vodkas cost less than one Pint at Piwna Stopa I bought another round.  Honour was maintained.

Poznan More Day3 Bier-Traveller (14)Again, as last night The Chaps had been to another venue across Stary Rynek – Meta Seta Galareta Disco.  This is exactly the sort of venue that may catch the eye in passing but nobody I know would ever dream of entering. There was dancing, this was ignored, Hector still had his senses. Lemon Wodka has been a favourite since Israel in 1986, not that I have had much.  Cherry Wodka was encountered last year, but Hazelnut?  Hazelnut Wodka could easily be Hector’s undoing.

Poznan Day 2 – The Lone Supper

It is somewhat frustrating in the days of Satellite TV when one finds not a single English speaking channel, so it was in Apartment Duo. Still, The Hector was busy as ever, there is always a Blog or twenty to write.

Poznan Stary Rynek Bier-Traveller (2)A day to myself in Poznan, a chance to revisit some favourite places and maybe track down some new. Hector and Marg were in Poznan last October with Steve and Louise, nothing was written, and so I have a wealth of knowledge already, but more importantly, enough photos to post the embedded Pages in the above Dropdown Banner.  By the end of this Trip I should have a  comprehensive coverage of this City, in time for another visit in October.

Poznan Malta Lake Bier-Traveller (2)Poznan Taj India Curry-Heute (4)

The Curry at Taj India was worth the effort.  That the service was a bit slow again did not matter, I had all day.  This Polska Trip was originally conceived to be Monday to Friday in Poznan with The Rickmeister and Stewart.  Only in the last week did The Man from Bradford deign to inform me that Monday meant a 23.00 arrival, I’ll see them tomorrow.

Poznan Chmielnik Bier-Traveller (3)Poznan Chmielnik Bier-Traveller (1)

Chmielnik was spotted in passing yesterday when the mission was Rowing Jack.  Today some new Piwa had to be sampled.  The desired Bier Style was described, the Chap serving suggested Tap 4 – Kryz Poludnia (5.%) is a NZPA (Browar Reden, Polska)Southern Cross – as it translates was a worthy first Piwa of the day, whilst – in the style – it did not quite give the – Wow – as one hoped.  This is how high the bar is set with Polish Craft Bier.  Other Sources have this as an APA, however this is certainly made with NZ Hops.  More please.

The wi-fi permitted further write-ups, though who knows how long it will take to write up this week, The India Trip is such a major task.  Chmielnik is a very pleasant place to sit, the view to the garden reminds that Piwna Stopa is across the way, but does not open until 16.00.  The afternoon is young, Dom Piwa should open around then too.  16Zl is a couple of Zloty more than one pays elsewhere for Piwa.

Pozna Dom Piwa Bier-Traveller (1)Pozna Dom Piwa Bier-Traveller (3)

Dom Piwa impressed last October when I first visited, I shall be coming here on every Trip to Poznan, how many more this year?  10 Hops (5.7%) is an APA by Birbant, Polska.  I have previously enjoyed their White AIPA (6.6%) whose Cascade Hops were seriously in the face. I took my Piwa upstairs to one of the two empty rooms above. It was still early for those who work.  10 Hops is Amber-Gold and did the job, though the name suggested it could have been more.  But then, Six Hops by Dark Star (Partridge Green, West Sussex) does not IMHO live up to its number rating either.

And so to Piwna Stopa.

Poznan Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller.comPoznan Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (2)

Piwna Stopa is the standout venue in Poznan.  The table at the top left of the room is where I have sat on nearly every visit, why change now?

Piwna Stopa Poznan Bier-Traveller.comPoznan Piwna Stopa Bier-Traveller (1)The Board looked the same as yesterday, time to gamble and try something new once more. I have never tried a Bier by Kraftwerk, Polska, I had to, if only so that I could text Howard and tell him how much I dislike Krafterk.  Citrinitas is listed elsewhere at 5.7%, The Board clearly shows 6.5%, whose error? Smoked Chili – was the given description, indeed, there was enough to notice but this was at the expense of the Hops. I would have this again, but not when my Favourite Piwa is staring down at me.

Hector was here until the bladder insisted I move.  The Lone Supper cannot leave a table with all the electronics on display, or can he?  This is Polska, in the many visits, there has been no sense of trouble, discomfort, crime.  Maybe next time I’ll risk leaving my worldy goods unguarded.

Rowing Jack (6.2%)  (Ale Browar, Polska) is Hector’s Favourite Tipple, the reason for being here.  Simcoe, Chinook, Citra, Cascade, and Palisade Hops all feature.  This is the most cheek-sucking experience one has encountered. The IBU is 70, other Biers are higher, but nothing else does it for me, so much.  Bier Heaven.

I watched the place fill up, people of all ages, all here to appreciate Bier.  There is an acceptable range of Bottled Cider too, it was at Piwna Stopa that Marg discovered Cider last October.  Finally, I had to go.

Poznan Ministerstwo Bier-Travellercom (1)Stary Rynek was not too busy this Monday evening, people were heading to the Bars that The Hector would never consider, cheap Eurofizz on sale.  Crossing to the south east corner I went up the hill towards 27 Grudnia.  Minesterstwo Browaru was where I had my first Piwa in Poznan, guess.  Having checked The Board yesterday, I though it time to try something Bottled.  Doctor Brew, Polska have impressed in the years of visiting Polska. Their Summer Ale (4.2%) is quite a step down from 6.2%, a challenge.  Again, US Hops to the fore, always refreshing, a Piwa I look out for.

Posted in Poznan | Comments Off on Poznan Day 2 – The Lone Supper

Steven Wilson is in Poznan today, so is Hector.

The train from Wroclaw was chosen so as to arrive in Poznan for the start of the second half of the Old Firm Match. I expected the Plush Carriage and Service we had last year moving between Warszawa and Katowice, I even bought a First Class Ticket at a whole £3.00 more. I found myself in a six seater carriage with one other Chap. I offered to let him see my Replacement Samsung but he was not bothered by a Rangers v Celtic Football Match. Why do the British Media tell us this game is avidly watched across the Planet?

Poznan Apr17 Bier-Traveller (7)The Mobdro App let me see about ten seconds in every minute, the signal strength varied, frozen screen was the norm. Rangers taking the lead was unexpected, we should not be playing Them off the park, we were. As the train pulled into Poznan, so the equaliser was scored. Ten minutes later I had checked in to Apartment Duo (£70.00 for five nights), game on. Minimal freezing, maximum enjoyment. Penalty kicks. My flatmates were probably curious as to why loud cheers were emanating from the room at the back. Yay!

Had my room been facing the front, I would have been able to see Sala Ziemi where tonight’s concert would be held. I walked up the street but could see no obvious entrance to a Theatre. I could see no Theatre, just gates, locked. There was nobody to ask. Worry later, there is Curry and Bier to be had, just enough time for both.

The Shivaz Curry House was found despite the address being totally misleading.  I had a couple of hours left for Piwa.Setka Poznan Bier-Traveller (2)Poznan Apr17 Bier-Traveller (2)Poznan Apr17 Bier-Traveller (6)Ministerstwo did not have Rowing Jack (Ale Browar, Polska) in Bottle or Draught, I did not hang about.  Setka is just around the corner, or so I thought.  One venue that I was really looking forward to visiting again – Closed!

The walk from 27 Grudnia to Stare Miasto is moments. Poznan’s Square does not rival Krakow or Wroclaw, but has its own charm, I suppose. The 1960s Monstrosity in Stary Rynek says it all.

Poznan Apr17 Bier-Traveller (8)Poznan Apr17 Bier-Traveller (10)

Out the far side of the Rynek is Dom Piwa , they had Rowing Jack in Bottles last October, my best chance of finding some on this, my third day in Polska. Success, Joy. With Four US Hops, this is my Favourite Bier on the Planet, currently. It disappeared very quickly, leaving time for a quick visit to what is my Favourite Pub in PoznanPiwna Stopa.

Poznan Apr17 Bier-Traveller (12)A quick glance at The Board, there it was, Rowing Jack on Tap. I acknowledged the Barman, I think he served us last year, the Chaps in here are always Friendly and Helpful. I took a seat, in fact, the very seat I occupied with Marg, Steve and Louise last October. Hector is Home. In October this year – The Official 60th Birthday Trip – is scheduled for WroclawPoznan – Gdansk. We shall be spending time here.

A Taxi Doris took me back to Sala Ziemi, she had no idea where to drop me. The Steven Wilson Concert somehow belongs in the Sister Blog, this is how it is.

An Outstanding Day, A Rangers Victory, I saw most of the Match, Very Good Curry, Rowing Jack and a Concert which justified the entire Polska Trip.

Tonight, I am a very Happy Old Hector.

Wroclaw – Day 2 – A City Explored

Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (6)Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (7)

There was little choice but to stay put, a thunderstorm was forecast for around 11.00.  This was not a good time to leave the Ibis Centrum, time instead to Blog making full use of the courtesy wi-fi.  Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (42)Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (2)

Wroclaw is  famous for its Dwarves which have been placed sporadically around the City, let’s not forget the longer established sculptures.

Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (3)Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (4)

In preparation for the Big Hector Trip in October 2016, it was good to establish that it is little more from the Ibis to the Rynek.  En route one passes a Scottish Bar, heaven forbid.  I tried the door just to see.  The door opened but Doris informed me quickly they were not open.  One can only imagine the horrors that are purveyed here.

Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (9)Brunch was the first requirement of the day.  A possible venue was closed already, The Hector chose a Vegetarian/Vegan Café Najadacze.pl.  Fear not, I have not lost the plot.

Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (17)Thereafter it was north-west to the Oder/Odra which skirts the edge of Stare Miasto, the attraction here was the Hala Targova (Market Hall) which houses the only known Multi-Tap House open at Lunchtime – Targova Craft Beer and Food. It was here that Hector made a very poor choice.

Wroclaw Targova Bier-Traveller (8)Wroclaw Targova Bier-Traveller (2)

The hoped for Hoppy Piwa did not shout off the Board, Old Lager (Dr. Brew, Polska) at a mere 7.9% somehow seemed to be a good idea for the first Bier of the day.  Dr. Brew is one of my Favourite Polish Breweries, what could go wrong?  What was served, and yes I chose the half-litre, was a Dark, Muddy, and Stronger version of the Ale served at U Fleku in Praha. Taking a seat at a bench at the far side of the serving area, I realised that it is a Saturday Lunchtime, well almost, and half of Wroclaw is here.  How can we arrive Mob-handed in the Autumn?

The Old Lager was too much, the glass was abandoned half full, or was it half empty.  There were other places to see.

Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (19)Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (23)

A bit of Kultur, I wandered through the Hala Targova, this should keep Marg amused whilst the rest of us claim seats in October.  Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (25)Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (24)

The only venue resembling a Milk Bar which revealed itself was also a few metres south towards the Stare Miasto.  Bar Jacek i Agatka is one for the future.

Wroclaw Bierhalle Bier-Traveller (3)Wroclaw Bierhalle Bier-Traveller (1)

Back at Rynek I had an hour to pass before the Best Piwa Houses would open at 16.00.  There was nothing for it, the Bierhalle it had to be.  Ten years ago this would have been Bier Makka, a German-style Microbrewery in Polska.  A Bar at the door was where I stopped first.  The range of Piwa was shown by a cooperative Waitress. It was suggested I go upstairs to the larger room, meanwhile it was too cold and wet to consider the extensive outdoor seating area on the Square. Marcowe (Browarmia Royal, Polska) at 5.8% is an Oktoberfest-style, semi-filtered, Deutsche Bier.  Unfortunately, it was everything that The Company has moved on from.  The Homemade Taste was there, the Old World Hops.  Drinkable, yes, but slowly.  One or two Chaps sat alone at adjacent tables, were they also waiting for better times?

The Upstairs Waitress provided the wi-fi code, nay luck, still didn’t work.  Still, the Replacement Samsung provided a decent enough signal.  At 15.55 it was time to leave, if Robin from last night was to be believed, 4 Hops would be a highlight.  Turning east on to Oswiecimskich, 4 Hops was a few minutes off the main stretch.

Wroclaw 4 Hops Bier-Traveller (1)Wroclaw 4 Hops Bier-Traveller (5)

As one has come to accept in Polska, the new premises which are springing up around the country are Drinking Rooms, in time they may develop atmosphere. With Sixteen Taps to choose from one is virtually guaranteed to find Piwa in-the-style at 4Hops.

Wroclaw 4 Hops Bier-Traveller (4)Ogrodnik (Profesja, Polska) at 6.0% is an IPA from another highly regarded Polska Browar. Full of the required New World Hops, this was Excellent.  One could easily have settled down to a Session on this, however, there was another Piwa which had to be sampled.  Papryk Swayze (Hopium, Polska) again at 6.0% is an APA.  The drinking belied the abv, more quaffable than the Ogrodnik, there was a Hop-Hit but nowhere near as intense.  Papryk Swayze, Browar Hopium are into this, I had their Moralyn Monroe in Bydgoszcz last year, which is probably Hoppier then this one.

Whilst I sat with the Netbook, others played Board Games, Children were even allowed on the premises, time to leave.

Wroclaw Prohibicja Bier-Traveller (1)Prohibicja is along the same street, west of Rynek and next door to Kontynuacja. This basement venue was discovered last night searching for the latter.  Once again it had a Board worthy of consideration, however as before the place was stowed, not welcoming to The Lone Supper.  If I was thirty years younger, a different story.

I took the same stool in Kontynuacja as last evening but this time would sit alone.  The Bar Staff acknowledged me, I was recognised by at least three Staff, welcoming.  The Board had minor changes.  Krakow’s very own would be the first Bier here, been to the Brewery have the t-shirt. Big Schmielowski (Browar Pracownia Piwa, Krakow, Polska) was a mere 4.4%.  They brew Piwa at this strength? The Bier name may imply – Big Hops – alas the low abv meant the Bier was too thin, The Taste was therefore not forthcoming.  Desperate measures called for, The Hector was studying a Pils!

Wroclaw Kontynuacja Bier-Traveller (6)There are few Pils I can drink, especially the Deutsche versions, far too perfumed for my Palate. It may well be this style of Bier which first registered the current disappointment, which could develop in time to an intolerance of Deutsche Bier.  Hopefully not.

Zloty Pisiont (Browar Artezan, Polska) at 5.0% still felt a bit on the Thin side.  With Amarillo and Simcoe Hops this had to be taken seriously, there was no perfume here.  It would have been good to compare with this with the Pacific Pale Ale, same Pub, same Brewery, last night.  Browar Artezan make some impressive Piwa.

Wroclaw Academus Bier-Traveller (1)Wroclaw Academus Bier-Traveller (2)

I had one more InnerCity venue yet to explore – Academus.  This was relatively easy to find, signage always helps.  Accommodation too, maybe next time.  The choice of Piwa was decidedly Mainstream, a range, if it can be called this, or Czech and Polish Standard Piwa.  I asked the barman for something Hoppy, he was no help whatsoever. Small Bier, who knows what? This was Sweet and pretty horrible, as I feared the previous Pils may have been.  Despite my cellar locus Marg was able to communicate, Hector was not alone.

Wroclaw Zaknad Uslug Piwnych Bier-Traveller.com (5)Wroclaw Zaknad Uslug Piwnych Bier-Traveller.com (6)

It may have been a long day, I had to return to ZUP.  The place was quieter than last night, some of the Staff maintained, new Peeps too.  The final Bier of the day was Pan IPani (Trzech Kumpli, Polska) at 6.0%.  This is a Wheat IPA, interesting.  Imagine Andechs Weizen meets IPA, with that description maybe there had to be another.

Polska – The Steven Wilson Week – Day #1 in Wroclaw

Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (42)Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (2)

The Ryanair flight to Wroclaw is a perfect time, no early rise in Glasgow, one arrives in Wroclaw in time of the Pubs opening. Not a lot happens in Wroclaw before 16.00 unless one knows exactly where to go. On arrival at the Nicholas Copernicus Airport @15.00 Hector had little clue, by the end of today I was well briefed.

The service bus seemed to take an hour to leave the Airport Complex, it was way cheaper than a taxi, first Piwa paid for in effect. Google Maps managed to locate my Ibis Hotel booking at the wrong locus. Even though I knew where my hotel is, I still went to the Ibis Styles, just in case. It was a ten minute walk westwards to the Ibis Centrum, the former Orbis by all accounts.

Opened just the week before, the entrance was not where one would expect, the elevators were set up strangely, at least the room was as expected.

Artezan Biale IPA Bier-Traveller.comThere was a short period of hibernation, no point going out in that rain, time to put in perspective the locations of Pubs and Curry Houses. First things first, a walk back to the train station to purchase a train ticket to Poznan on Sunday. Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), is why Hector is in Polska days before the rest of The Due Company, roll on Sunday evening. On Sunday afternoon there is a Minor Sporting Event taking place at Hampden Park. Depending on the result, it could become a Major Event.

Had I gone straight from the Ibis to Pub Stacja it would have been under ten minutes, a Kebab Shop spotted for later perhaps. Oh, some Late Night Establishments, shall we call them, in the railway arches.

Wroclaw Stacja Bier-Traveller (2)There was a choice of 12 Biers on Tap, Biale IPA (Browar Artezan, Polska) at 5.6% was the first Bier of The Trip. I first had this at the excellent Piwna Stopa in Poznan and found it served uncharacteristically Flat. Biale, I know is White, so presumably a Wheat content. The Hops were there, that is why The Hector is here, in Polska they put Hops in their Piwa, and then some more.

Hector Naypals was not in the least concerned about Supping Alone, the Samsung Netbook is making its Final Trip, I am still busy writing up The India Trip. A Big Event at the end of this month will see the Netbook superseded. This is how I perceive – Retirement.

Wroclaw Apr15 Bier-Traveller (3)I could now see that it was a straight walk from the Ibis Centrum to the Stare Miasto as I headed into town. The Outer Ring Road and Canal means that Wroclaw is set up almost identically to Koblenz and Düsseldorf. It would be difficult toget lost, it’s just a matter of coming to terms with the distances. Approaching the Rynek, I passed the type of Bars that sell nothing but Eurofizz. Even Tank Piwa has lost its charm. A Bierhalle was located in the heart of Rynek, one for tomorrow. The Zloty PiesGolden Dog was reportedly closed, the signage was there, nothing else to report.

Wroclaw Apr15 Bier-Traveller (10)Wroclaw Apr15 Bier-Traveller (12)

There had to be Curry-Heute, what does one expect when The Hector is left to his own devices? The Masala Grill & Bar served me two Main Courses, one was memorable for the right reasons.

Wroclaw Apr15 Bier-Traveller (16)Wroclaw Apr15 Bier-Traveller (14)

Back across Rynek and retracing my steps I came to the street named after the most dreaded of Polish Settlements, here lies Kontynuacja, the venue which stands out currently most in Beerpubs.pl. It took three attempts to find the right door, Polish addresses are difficult, I was in Prohibicja first, and another Bland Bar. Prohibicija had potential, was mobbed and was not for The Lone Supper.

Wroclaw Konynuacja Bier-Traveller (3)There was one bar stool free in Kontynuacja, I climbed on, the Netbook still being worn. Whatever happens this stays on. The Bier from Browar Artezan was first encountered in Bydgoszcz last October, the IPA served there was Magnificent. I had to try the Pacific Pale Ale at 5.0%. For a Piwa, this is not particularly high in abv. It was not the Hoppiest, but was certainly in – The Style – which is sought after.

Goodnight

The Chap on my right was busy in conversation, English was being spoken, his mate left. This was Robin from Liverpool, an Everton fan. There’s two of them. Robin has been living in Wroclaw for years, he knows the score. He confirmed the venues I had worked out doing my own research, and most importantly, supplied one which opens before the rest. Lunch tomorrow is sorted.

The venue was too stowed to get decent photos, anyway, the Bier and the Conversation is why we were here.

Wroclaw Konynuacja Bier-Traveller (2)Wroclaw Konynuacja Bier-Traveller (4)Robin recommended the Oatmeal IPA (Marwari, Polska) at 6.0%. As I recall it had just gone on, and Doris behind the Bar had supplied a sample. She was looking after us very well. It was so good, I had another as Robin was summoned by his other half. The Cloudy appearance should not be off-putting, this had the required Hop Hit. A Piwa to remember.

There was a brief flirtation with the thought of Arrogant Bastard American – Strong Ale, I had to move on.

ZUP

Last summer, Kuba, Mein Host at Chmielarnia, Warszava, gave me a Bier-mat with a written message to his counterpart here at ZUP in Wroclaw. Robin had confirmed this was definitely worth the visit and explained that – ZUP – is an acronym. Google Maps took me across another part of Rynek I had not seen in daylight, there is more to this Square than I first thought, impressive. Locating the address, there was only a Eurofizz Pub. A Chap was determined that I would pay to go and look at bare naked ladies, Hector was on a different mission. Back to Beerpubs.pl. The address for Zaklad Uslug Piwnych was recomputed, a ten minute walk.

Wroclav Apr16 Bier-Traveller (30)Arriving at Ruska 34 I found the Boogie Hostel, no ZUP. Most of the block was in scaffolding, I asked Chaps standing outside. They spoke neither English or Polish, Bloody Tourists! Useless. I headed back to town, through the scaffolding, then remembered Chmielarnia, we were standing outside but couldn’t see it. I went back to the address, walked though the Throng and found a staircase to the Basement – ZUP!

Greetings!

Wroclaw Zaklad Uslug Piwnych Bier-Traveller (12)Wroclaw Zaklad Uslug Piwnych Bier-Traveller (15)I hadn’t even reached the Bar when I was welcomed with open arms by The Chaps occupying the Bar Corner. The Saltire on the Polo-shirt did it all, I was here to discover Ale, the task was suddenly made more simple, Translator in situ. Fajrant IPA (Browar Zakladowy, Polska) at 4.5% was deemed to be the Session IPA. This was Bland for a Polska Piwa, but had some Hops, Session indeed. Bring it on!  My Sister, the real one, was in touch, – what does Fajrant mean?  The end of a physical job.

Football, Whisky, the usual, The Chaps kept me entertained and introduced me to the Bar Staff. The Kuba Connection from Warszawa was completed, everyone knows Kuba. A bit of Politics, The Chaps here consider themselves to be as German as they do Polish, they are young, they have not been though what their parents and grandparents experienced. More Piwa!

Wroclaw Zaklad Uslug Piwnych Bier-Traveller (14)Next up was another White IPA, Topaz American Weizen (Browar Inne Beczki, Polska) at 6.0%. This was more like it, American Hops and a suitable Tang. It was well after midnight, the session continued. Cieszynkskie (Browar Zamkowy, Polska) at 8.5% should provide a good end to the evening. A Saison Bier? This Amber Ale was full of the Polish Piwa Flavour, how they combine the Hops. There was a slight sweetness, at this abv, not a surprise.

All Good Things…

Hang on, this is Day 1, six more nights of this? I bought a Kebap…. and a Taxi.

Agra – New Delhi, The End is Nigh

Marg and Hector were last on the bus this morning, there was a Cash Crisis looming again What had we spent our money on? Nothing actually, today was Tip Day. The last of the Euros was converted, we need enough to cover Dinner this evening, and were unsure about the arrangements for Lunch. We had seen Toll Roads at Gurgaon as we passed through on our way to Rajahstan. The road from Agra to New Delhi was as close to motorway as one might find in India. Much of the road was elevated when it crossed through established settlements thus avoiding congestion. In fact, this highway was quiet except when vehicles overtook on the inside and out – Toot -too-toot.

Lunch turned out to be a Pit-Stop at the equivalent of a Motorway Service Station. Neither of was particularly hungry, Spicy Crisps sufficed. We don’t get Crisps like this in the UK.  Crossing into New Delhi, the Coach Curtains were tied up, farewell to roaming cows.

Gandhi’s House
Delhi Gandhi House Bier-Traveller (40)Delhi Gandhi House Bier-Traveller (30)

First thoughts were the contradiction of such a Modest Man. The interior of the House had various attempts at museum exhibits, some more convincing than others. The Life-story was told in pictures. The gardens were perhaps the best part of this Historic Site, it was here Gandhi was shot, poignant. Again, there was a time-line relating his early years in South Africa before moving on to London then finally back to India. Marg may have seen Attenborough’s movie, Hector unbelievably has not.

Another Museum?
I cannot say I felt any great sense of enthusiasm as we entered the National Museum. An hour, to look at weapons and embroidery. As a Geographer I was drawn to the world Map, it showed the parallel development of Civilisations across the planet.  I had to explain to some the meanings of B.C.E. and C.E.  Rosemary mentioned an Exhibition upstairs. There’s an upstairs? Two more floors, and Hector had paced two thirds of the allotted time on the ground floor.

Most Impressive
I have often wondered what other religions there were to rival Judaism in the years B.C.E. That there was another which has survived in part to this age is all the more remarkable. Zarathustra, Parsis, The Magi, Freddie Mercury too.

The Lotus Temple

Delhi Lotus Temple Bier-TRaveller.comThe Final Stop of the Grand Tour was near to the Lotus Temple, that we were not going in bemused. There’s nothing to see inside, we didn’t even go in the compound, photos through the gaps in the perimeter. And so we bade – Farewell – to Nevandra our Driver, Raj his Assistant and Water Wallah. We were told that they would be away with another Group tomorrow. Finally, Bhupendra, Bhupi, whom I can now reveal is opening a very Posh Hotel. This Chap is very much part of India’s Aristocracy. He undertakes his handful of Tours each year to pay for the education of the Children whose Father died after sucking snake poison from Bhupi’s Father. Honourable.

Marg wished to swim, Hector accompanied as far as the pool-side. See you later, Dear.
The Usual Suspects were sitting at one end of a high and long table. Ladies had wine Chaps had Bier, or did they? One Bier will never be named in this Blog, is this all they have? The Menu showed the various Kingfishers and more. Needs must, it’s hot out there. Before I had achieved the halfway mark in Bottle #1, Karina had a Tête à Tête with The Waiter to establish why Drinks were coming one at a time and could they do a Bottle of Wine. The Waiter admitted to having two Bottles only of Kingfisher Ultra, bring them here right now – was Hector’s directive. The Freebie was also summoned and passed along the table to someone less fussy.
