Chicago IL

On a – Round The World Tour – one has to ensure the avoidance of monsoons and winter. The 42ºN parallel passes through Chicago’s Loyola University Campus, and the Mediterranean. Climatically, these loci could not be too different. The Midwest has a continental climate, whilst summer temperatures may match the Mediterranean, winters are severe.

Winds may well blow onshore from Lake Michigan, the term – Windy City – has, allegedly, as much to with gasbag politicians as meteorology.

At school, I was taught that Chicago was the – railhead – of the Midwest, with so few transcontinental trains, this maintains. Being sited on the shore of Lake Michigan also makes it accessible by water transport to the Atlantic Ocean via the Great Lakes.

The Burgess Land Use Model was conceived in 1925 to explain urban and social structures of cities. Visiting in 2024, the Factory Zone had been absorbed by the expansion of the CBD, particularly northwards towards Chicago’s Old Town. It is in this area visitors should consider residing.

Arriving in Chicago:

On previous trips to Chicago, Hector had never been through immigration having been in transit. Arriving in May 2024, on a domestic flight, again no immigration.

Our departure flight was to Canada, showing right of entry was a formality.

The Blue Line metro runs from Chicago O’Hare International to the city centre, and from there are other connecting lines.
