Paris – France

Paris, France – so say the citizens of the USA, it took a movie to explain why. After a school trip in 1971, an Inter-Rail visit in 1976, Hector was in no rush to return. Like Athena (Hellas) and Venezia (Italia), this is not a city for Chaps, but – Couples. When I returned earlier this century with Marg, the sites suddenly made sense, and so I include photos of the classic landmarks we all learned at school. It was on this trip that I finally made the ascent to the top of the Tour Eiffel. Done it, no need to do so again. Now I gather in days of T’Internet, one may be required to book this in advance.

One further piece of advice: the Metro gets you around the inner city with great ease, for longer journeys, e.g. Disneyland and La Defense, use the RER. Do not change from the Metro to the RER unless you are ticketed, you will be fined as you try to exit.

Chatelet – Les Halles

In the Millennium Visit, we stayed in Rue Saint Denis and so became familiar with the area around Chatelet Les Halles. Le Frog et Rosbif, a couple of Metro stops to the north, became an instant favourite. We found ourselves pulled back here in 2015 and so I begin this page with reference to the Cafes, Bars and Restaurants recorded in 2015 in this central area.

Montmartre

The Sacre Couer is the prominent building in this area, like most buildings of this type, Hector has never been inside but prefers to limit one’s appreciation to the exterior architecture. The movie – Amelie – made the climb to the top of the steps all the more significant. Hopefully I had my photo taken at the correct binoculars. Ironically, where the binoculars are sited, the vista does not include the Tour Eiffel. If the tree are in bloom, forget it, otherwise, if one takes a few steps to the west, a glimpse may be possible.

There is a Flea Market to the rear of the Sacre Couer worth exploring. One may have passed the nearby Moulin Rouge on the approach.

Quartier Latin

Back in 1971, Hector stayed at Lycee Henri Quatre which is how Rue St. Germain and the Latin Quarter were discovered. It is a pleasant walk by day from the Seine, passing the Sorbonne and the Pantheon. As with Trastevere (Roma, Italia), this area has a Village atmosphere as is manifested by the ad hoc assembly of people around the small park area early evening. Hector was here in 2015 in search of Brewberry, it was Marg who spotted Le Chouff’ Bar across the street. We were here two evenings and so tried two restaurants, one French, one Greek.
