Pisa, Tuscany, everyone has heard of this city in north-west Italia due to a fourteenth century engineering fubar. Thanks to more recent engineering, the Leaning Tower has not tilted further, to the point where instability would take its toll. FYI – this tower is only the second most tilted tower in Italia, degli Asinelli (Bologna) has that honour.
By day, Pisa is filled with tourists, many passing through. By night, the local population are is in even greater numbers, this city has quite a distinctive evening atmosphere.
Arriving in Pisa
Pisa Centrale lies to the south of the Mediaeval core of the city which is a ten to fifteen minute walk north across the River Orno. Aeroporto Internazionale di Pisa lies a similar distance south of Pisa Centrale, one could therefore conceivably walk to/from the airport. Ryanair serve the airport with flights to Edinburgh, Glasgow Prestwick and more.
Having crossed the Orno on Ponte di Mezzo, one cannot help but notice how little activity there is along the waterfront. On the north bank, beyond Piazza Garibaldi lies the main axis. Hidden behind the buildings lie many other squares, here is the locus of the nightlife.
Torre di Pisa, the Leaning Tower, lies just within the northern wall of the Mediaeval city adjacent to the cathedral.
