Cagliaria, locally known as – Casteddu – is the principal city of Sardegna, and is located in the south of the island. Cagliari’s airport is complemented by two more in the north of the island at Alghero and Olbia. Cagliari is connected to the cities of the north by the railway which runs predominantly on the west side of Sardegna. Cagliari’s Elmas Airport is connected by a short and inexpensive train journey to the waterfront in the heart of the city. Here lies the Autostazione, the main bus station, and the port. The port has ferries leaving for Napoli on the Italian mainland, and also Sicilia (Palermo).
Cagliari is sited on the southern end of a hilly peninsula with lagoons on either side.
The urban core is on a steep hill leading up to the Castello and Bastione Saint Remy, the principal viewpoint over the city.
For views back towards to the city, Parco di Monte Urpinu is worth the climb. The hills are not to be taken lightly. Plan your journey, buy a day ticket for the bus, and do not be surprised at the somewhat devious routes. Linea 10 – bus goes past the major sights, and avoids hill walks.
Spiaggia del Poetto, the beach, lies to the east of Cagliari. This is a sandbar lying beyond the nature reserves and is easily accessible by bus. A Metro runs up the centre-east side of the peninsula, the downtown terminus is at Piazza della Repubblica.
Before attending to Bier matters, for those who appreciate archaeological sites, Nora, thirty five kilometres southwest of Cagliari, is highly recommended. Within the city is the impressive Anfiteatro Romano di Cagliari. Adjacent to the amphitheatre is Orto Botanico, the Botanic Gardens.

Four nights were spent in Cagliari in the summer of 2019, four nights of frustration. Why do so many venues close over the summer months? Do not rely on Google for opening times.
The standout experience for local cuisine is Antica Cagliari. The Curry scene was OK, but one venue in particular did impress.
