Located in the heart of the Altstadt, metres from Das Rhein, there is often as much activity outside of Uerige as inside. There is service at the tables at the outside wall as well as the dedicated area opposite. Within the Bier Haus is a labyrinth of rooms in the middle of which is the open area housing Bert & Doris who sit in their corner. They usually together, sometimes they seemingly fall out.
Altbier is an acquired taste. Uerige Altbier (4.7%) is the bitterest of the array of brews on offer in Düsseldorf, perhaps this is what makes it the favourite. In December 2017, I was fortunate to be invited to join Fred Waltman and his company to share on the barrel of Sticke (6.0%) which had been held back for him. With far more body, quite a treat.

Table service only, the gravity poured Bier is served in 0.25l glasses which keep coming. There have been some highly – ticked – Biermats over the years. Order – Frikadellen – way better than any Burger.
The Gulaschsuppe is always worth trying.
