Rome, the eternal city, yet Roma is only the second most visited in Italia, Venezia retains the prime spot until the city tax drives people away. Expect to pay the tassa di soggiorno at €8.00 per person, per night in Roma, on top of your agreed hotel bill.

Arriving in Roma

By ‘plane

Aeroporto di Roma – Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci – is the likely airport at which to arrive. From here therein a bus to Roma Termini, the main train station. However Fiumicino has its own train station, thus offers more flexibility. For those staying in Trastevere, ideal.

For those arriving at Aeroporto di Roma Ciampino – Giovani Battista Pastine International Airport, it’s a bus to Termini.

Airport buses arrive/depart from the south side of Roma Temini.

On the west side, the Metro and the urban buses.

Arriving by train

Roma Termini is the likeliest arrival station, though the much improved Roma Tiburtina is possible. There are frequent connections to Termini, ensure the class of train ticket you are travelling on is valid for your connection.

Getting around Roma

That way you see the sights. However, in time, you’ll give in to hopping on a bus.

There are three Metro lines, a network that continues to expand. Urban buses have both numbers and letters, e.g. H from Termini to Trastevere. Whilst there are six numbered Tramlines, they have a habit of being closed for upgrading. The replacement buses may stop at the tram platform, or at the adjacent bus stop.

You need a ticket to travel, single tickets are a waste of money and effort. From a Tabacchi, or machine, buy tickets appropriate for your length of stay. They are valid for hours, not days. The tickets are valid on trams, buses and the Metro.

Validate a ticket once.

On the Metro, your ticket will be scanned on entry and exit.

For those who prefer to keep their Bier drinking until the evenings, there is of course the wonder of ancient Rome to discover plus many more recent- historic/tourist – sights. A day trip to Ostia Antica, the ancient port of Roma, is highly recommended. This site is comparable in size to Pompeii and just as impressive.

The suburban train to Ostia Antica leaves from the terminus station – Roma Porta S. Paolo, next to Piramide Metro.

For a longer day trip, take Metro Line B to Ponte Mammolo then bus PI48A towards Tivoli. Villa Adriana (Hadrian’s Villa) is highly recommended and again is of comparable scale to Ostia Antica.

Within the city boundary are two lesser known sights to be considered, and therefore well away from crowds. Within walking distance of Circo Massimo, Terme di Caracalla (Baths of Caracalla) and further out: Villa dei Quintilli – Archaeological Park of Appia Antica.

The previous statement is all that was written in these pages for far too long. In the first trip of the twenty first century to Roma in 2004, the search for new-age Italian-brewed Birra took Hector and Marg to Starbess Birrificio where we were made most welcome. Sadly it disappeared shortly afterwards. In recent years the Craft Beer scene has blossomed, the Italians have come to appreciate there is more than Eurofizz to Birra.

Beware of the meaning of Birreria. It does translate as – Brewpub, but is more likely to be – alehouse, beer house or brasserie. Birrificio is the best chance of finding Bier brewed on the premises. One then runs the risk of finding a Brewery but no Taproom.
