Located in Otago on New Zealand’s South Island, Dunedin is close to 46ºS, as far south as one can expect to be on land unless one visits Santa Cruz, Argentine, or Antarctica. In terms of the northern hemisphere, the equivalent latitude to the Oregon–Washington border, or France.
Visited in April 2024, the plan on the – Around The World In 80 Days – trip was to get here before winter set in this far south, whilst reach the aforementioned US states as summer approached. Warmer clothes were therefore carried halfway around the World for the days spent here. Smarter people would have flown south from Auckland as soon as possible and worked one’s way back north.
Arriving in Dunedin
Originally, there was meant to be car hire picked up in Nelson and driven south via Christchurch, then dropped of in Dunedin. Since a certain Pandemic, car hire in New Zealand has become astronomical. The hire cars were sent back to Japan, I was informed. Theoretically, there are trains on the South Island, the only ones seen were transporting freight.
Momona, the airport lies to the south-west of Dunedin on a former glacial lake bed at 45.92º south. An international airport, propeller jobs serve the South Island, jets to Auckland in the North Island.
There is public transport, albeit the buses are sporadic. Google Maps does give timetables.
Dunedin is Carville, spread out like many a US city, and there are hills, lots of them.
