Honolulu HI
Honolulu is the main city on Oahu, one of the chain of volcanic islands which form Hawaii. At 21.3ºN, Honolulu lies within the tropics and thus is warm-hot all year round. Rainfall peaks in the months around the turn of the year, however one must be prepared to deal with the odd downpour at any time.
Arriving in Honolulu
Daniel K. Inouye International Airport lies to the west of Honolulu close to Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Those arriving from conterminous USA will arrive on a domestic flight. For those who have come from Asia/Oceania and have just crossed the International Dateline, check your calendar and your clocks.
On alighting from the ‘plane, passengers may dream of being greeted by beautiful ladies in traditional costume awaiting to adorn with garlands. The reality, passengers are herded through the international arrivals hall to a bus stop.
However, if one wishes to experience the – lei – ceremony, this can be arranged online in advance. Whether the wearing of a garland around one’s neck speeds progress through the airport is unknown.
In the main terminal, luggage is collected before clearing immigration. Occasional travellers can expect the full treatment: finger prints and photographing. Compared to arriving on the eastern seaboard of mainland USA, this is a breeze.
Bus 20/40 from outside the terminal takes you to the city. This can take up to forty five minutes to Ala Moana, an hour to the Diamond Head end of Waikiki. Cash can be used to pay the fare.
Leaving Honolulu
Arrive early. Check-in may be smooth unless you are flying on a One World – Round The World – ticket and Alaska Airlines have no knowledge of your baggage allowance.
The queue for security in domestic departures rivals the worst ever witnessed and this includes the new Berlin Flughafen (BER).
Air-side, the terminal has no exterior walls. Look out for the Japanese Garden.
