Staminee De Garre – Brugge

Staminee De Garre – De Garre 1, 8000 Brugge

Located in a two storey building down a lane off the south-east corner of Grote Markt, De Garre must have been walked past by millions. Fortunately, back in 1997, we had been advised to search it out.

De Garre has been my starting point for Bier in Brugge on nearly every trip. Open daily at noon until 21.00, 19.00 on Monday & Tuesday, always a good place to visit until ‘t Brugs Beertje opens at 16.00.

There is a ground floor bar which most, who are able, ignore. Sitting upstairs in the mezzanine is de rigueur.

There, another bar, plus a dedicated member of staff, makes it an occasion. A much more personal service up there.

The peaceful, always classical music, creates a unique atmosphere.

For a time, there used to be a sign on the wall suggesting that for the sake of one’s health, three Biers should be the limit. This advice was always adhered to, before moving on to the next pub.

There may be another seven Biers on tap and something like fifty more in bottles to choose from, however, I tend not to vary from having the house Tripel van De Garre, a mere 11.0%.

Blond, clear, and so easy to drink, this Bier is dangerous.

The accompanying soupçon of cheese always makes it a further treat.

Take care on the stairs on the way down.
